				 CrossIron Mills

Just found a wikipedia article on the new mall in Balzac that will, as I just found out, be called CrossIron Mills.
Thought I'd pass on the link and some info to this interested:

- 968,751.9 sq ft (initially)

- Future expansions will include a movie theatre complex, additional restaurants, hotels, and of the course the Horse Racing facility and Casino.

- Total development will be 674 acres.

- Metis Trail (36th Street NE) is being expanded and extended out to CrossIron Mills. The QE2 will be the other major access.

- 10-15 anchor stores (apparently no department stores) and approximately 180 stores total including retail, entertainment, and restaurants.

- Opening August 2009

Holy guacamole. I knew it was going to be huge, but a full section+? Even Chinook is less than half a section. Are they going to have some kind of airport moving sidewalks in there?

Its a severe drain on Alberta's already stretched water resource.

If I was the City, I would pop down a toll road on every road to that development. That developer is a leach, nothing more and if we had any sort of descent politicians in this provice no development like that would be allowed to exist.

Its similar to what Red Deer county does with Gasoline alley which also shouldnt be allowed to exist.

True, their main customers are Calgary tax payers, but they don't pay any taxes themselves to Calgary. So in a sense, the MD of Rockyview is getting all the benefits of having this mall. The only thing that benefits Calgary is any tourists doing a stopover in Calgary to go to this mall. But this is more than offset by the lost business of local businesses.

Putting a toll booth on Highway 2 would go over real well... especially with the province that would never allow it.

The city of Airdrie has concerns over the impact to local business as well, however I really don't see why this is so evil becuase it is being built in the MD of Rockyview. Surely the MD has the right to develop its land, especially as Calgary continually eats up its tax base via annexation.

Will this mall hurt some businesses in Calgary? Certianly. Honestly, however, it is not going to be a destination of choice for at least half the city, given it's location, and shopping in the north of Calgary is downright mediocre. From Calgary's perspective, I highly doubt CrossIron will have a noticably detrimental impact.

What about inducing sprawl?

True... and we should also have the government assign us jobs and pay us all the same wage, irrespective of how hard we actually work. No free enterprise business should be 'allowed to exist', that way we'd all get what we needed provided for us by the government, which would control all aspects of our utopian life.
