Funny that there is a huge backlash against Coldplay...its bound to happen once a band becomes that successful. I wasn't a huge fan of the last album, but they are a decent band with some very good material overall. I'm still interested to hear what they do. Coldplay are a good pop band..safe music, but not necessarily bad safe music. Not everything has to be groundbreaking (like Radiohead).

should be interesting to see where they go with this - the last one felt far too U2ish for my liking.

Just heard the new song... It's heavier than their other stuffs, so far I like it! I need to give it a better listen at the office, where I keep my Bose headphones. Right now, I'm just listening on my laptop speakers.

Off I go!

My heart started pounding when I saw the thread title. Thought they were coming here. Can't wait for the free download though.

I love the song. Their sound on this album is going to be awesome, if this is any indicator. Heavier than some of their last stuff, but very well done.

Holy crap. IMO, there's no way that's a bad thing.

Coincidentally, this album was produced by Brian Eno...

The same Brian Eno that produced:

- The Unforgettable Fire
- The Joshua Tree
- Achtung Baby
- All That You Can't Leave Behind

Also of interest, he's the guy that brought us... The Microsoft Sound! (You know, that little startup sound from Windows 95.)

Love this quote from him about that:
Quote:
The idea came up at the time when I was completely bereft of ideas. I'd been working on my own music for a while and was quite lost, actually. And I really appreciated someone coming along and saying, "Here's a specific problem – solve it." The thing from the agency said, "We want a piece of music that is inspiring, universal, blah-blah, da-da-da, optimistic, futuristic, sentimental, emotional," this whole list of adjectives, and then at the bottom it said "and it must be 3¼ seconds long." I thought this was so funny and an amazing thought to actually try to make a little piece of music. It's like making a tiny little jewel. In fact, I made 84 pieces. I got completely into this world of tiny, tiny little pieces of music. I was so sensitive to microseconds at the end of this that it really broke a logjam in my own work. Then when I'd finished that and I went back to working with pieces that were like three minutes long, it seemed like oceans of time.

I for one am very impressed by the degree of attack towards music snobs in this thread. As a recovering music snob myself it's nice to reflect back on the ###### I used to be and laugh at my ignorance.

I was one of the only people I knew that didn't really like Parachutes, but since then I've really enjoyed each album.

I can understand people liking or not liking Coldplay. I get bored listening to them personally.

edit: listened to the song and once again it doesn't do much for me. Ehn.

Hmmm...I don't know what to make of their new single. I liked the prevous three Coldplay albums, but that particular song sems to be lacking depth to me. I'm still digesting it, though!

I like the tune. It's different for Coldplay...so that's nice.
Did anyone else read that U2 just scrapped the entire new album after spending a year on it?

Not my favorite of theirs but it's ok. I wouldn't turn it off if it came on the radio, but wouldn't put it on my ipod.

Pretty good for Coldplay. I'm not a fan, but I didn't mind listening to it.

His vocals really piss me off, and I can't really pinpoint why. But they always have. And I wasn't crazy about the Killers-esque semi-echoey-megaphone-type-effect (sorry to get technical) on his voice either.

But way better than most of X&Y.

I think Rockstar summed it up. I liked X&Y, but this is more similar to early Killers stuff. I really really like it though, the end is Coldplayish, but the meat if the song is Killersesq. I hope this album is going to go places and it already looks like it's heading in a great direction.
