There is a scientology church (Ron L. Hubbard Academy) just down the street from where I live and for the last few Saturdays in a row they have people standing across the street from it picketing them and protesting against the church. I managed to snap a couple pics.

In fairness, I think there's a big difference. Christians pay a tithe because charity is a virtue, and the idea is that the money goes toward the creation of a community, and to support the spiritual endeavor, etc. Also, it's not mandatory--no-one is standing at the door to collect a thousand dollars an hour for your sermon. I don't do it myself, but I can easily see how in Church, putting money in the collection plate just makes you feel a part of the community. I can see how it's spiritual--demonstrating your engagement with the faith community you're affiliated with.
On the other hand, scientologists pay thousands of dollars to someone who promises to make you into a super-human. That's not being spiritual--it's being a sucker.

I took one. It was called "Cults of North America". It discussed the beliefs of cults in general, but also had representatives from Hare Krishnas, Moonies, Scientology, and an anti-cult group (which, interestingly, uses similar techniques to the cults they oppose) come in and speak. This was one of the most popular classes at school (McMaster) - people who weren't in the class would flood the lecture hall when the Hare Krishnas came to visit.

I'm not sure what's dumber: giving hundreds of thousands of dollars to a cult that promises to make you immortal or taking the role of Peter Macallister in " Home Alone 4".

If you follow the quoting, it makes sense.

I still don't see the connection between giving money as a charitable purpose and the notion of salvation in that verse.
Weak.

The point being made was that spending huge amounts of money to acheive a level of immortality is antithetical to the point of this verse.

I was responding to this statement:

Christians believe that through their belief in Jesus they will be granted ever-lasting life in heaven after their death, hence, immortality. It says so right there in John 3:16.
Do you have to spend money to be a Christian? Not necessarily, but tithing is either mandatory or very strongly encouraged by some branches/denominations. It's not that much of a stretch to compare the practice to Scientology.

I can't say I've ever experienced this. Any church I have ever been to has passed the collection plate around and that's about the extent of it. The pastor may quote a passage about charity, but that's as pushy as I've seen it. I'm sure some churches may be a little more forthright but in general I think Christians who tithe do so not strictly because they want to get to heaven but because they want to attend a place of worship that has heat and electricity. A lot of churches barely scrape by.

Also, there's a world of difference between a couple of bucks in a collection plate and 1000 dollars an hour to turn you into a superhuman.
