The Pogues - Body of an American

The cadillac stood by the house
And the yanks they were within
And the tinker boys they hissed advice
hot-wire her with a pin
We turned and shook as we had a look
In the room where the dead men lay
So big jim dwyer made his last trip
To the home where his fathers laid

Fifteen minutes later
We had our first taste of whiskey
There was uncles giving lectures
On ancient irish history
The men all started telling jokes
And the women they got frisky
By five oclock in the evening
Every there was piskey

Fare thee well going away
Theres nothing left to say
Farewell to new york city boys
To boston and pa
He took them out
With a well-aimed clout
He was often heard to say
Im a free born man of the usa

He fought the champ in pittsburgh
And he slashed him to the ground
He took on tiny tartanella
And it only went one round
He never had no time for reds
For drink or dice or whores
And he never threw a fight
Unless the fight was right
So they sent him to the war

Fare the well gone away
Theres nothing left to say
With a slainte joe and erin go
My loves in amerikay
The calling of the rosary
Spanish winde from far away
Im a free born man of the usa

This morning on the harbour
When I said goodbye to you
I remember how I swore
That Id come back to you one day
And as the sunset came to meet
The evening on the hill
I told you Id always love
I always did and I always will

Fare thee well gone away
Theres nothing left to say
cept to say adieu
To your eyes as blue
As the water in the bay
And to big jim dwyer
The man of wire
Who was often heard to say
Im a free born man of the usa

Good cover though.
I think this is one of the few, few cases where the cover is better than the original.

Good cover though.
I was definitely aware of that, I just don't like NIN. As has already been stated, Cash does a better job with it. And I could be wrong, but I remember someone pointing out that even Reznor thought so and ended up saying it was now his song.

For comparisons sake:

EG is correct. Trent Reznor was so moved by Cash's version that he said 'Hurt' was now Johnny's song. I'm pretty sure everyone was well aware of the song's origination.

Here's another sad version of the song as well. Seems it has some commonality from artist to artist.

OKay, I can't seem to get this embedded, so I will just post the link. Further to my post above, Blind Willie Johnson, Dark was the Night, Cold was the Ground

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BNj2BXW852g

Edit: Well I got me embedding to work somewhat, but it definately has issues; anyone have any suggestions?

I'm a huge NIN fan and I find Cash's version of hurt insulting.
An absolute butchered version of a great song.

Didn't see it listed but The Verve Pipe - The Freshmen is pretty sad.

Well you sir, have no taste! When even the original author of the song admits that it's no longer his song.. yikes.

Cash did an amazing job covering it. Besides crown of thorns is better than crown of ****

I don't like country musicians, sorry.

I wouldn't call Cash's version country really. Folk sure, but it's simply brilliant.

There's nothing more embarrassing than a 'music' fan rejecting a song because they think they can shoehorn it into a certain genre. Open your ears, you might learn something.

I prefer Cash's rendition of Hurt over the NIN original and I hate country music. NIN couldn't touch the emotion that Cash put into that song.

Why should I be embarrassed?

Don't you tell me how I feel, you don't know just how I feel.

NIN should feel privileged that a man like Johnny Cash would do them the honor of covering one of there songs

Good on them for making it his, its how it should be
