Very few songs by them are about what they look like. There's a lot more there than a missing cat, IMO.

Another one by Mr Steve Earle

Billy Austin

About a young native man who while robbing a gas station kills the clerk, he calls the cops and gives himself up right away...however he gets mistreated by the justice system and ends up with the death senctence

The song is about his walk too the chair, true story

Steve was there watched die, very powerful last line

Could you pull that switch yourself sir?
With sure and steady hand
And than could you still tell yourself sir
That your better than I am

EMILY

I will not forget my sister's face
the day that she died
such a frail little girl
I remember how I cried

when she reached out to squeeze my hand
I knew her time had come
and when her fingers slipped from mine
I knew that it was done

oh sweet Emily you're going Home
sweet Emily and I can't go

looking back upon our younger days
when we'd go out to play
she was weaker than the rest of us
so we'd laugh and run away

but sometimes I'd lie awake at night and
wonder what was wrong
oh I had the feeling even then
that her days would not be long

oh sweet Emily you're going Home
sweet Emily and I can't go

sometimes I almost hear her calling me
but Heaven seems so far away

I will not forget my sister's face
the strange way that she smiled
like the times she'd gaze up in the sky
when she was just a child

and I still can hear the echo
of the last thing she could say
this life is but a moment
in the morning of my day

oh sweet Emily you're going Home
sweet Emily and I can't go

sweet Emily you're going Home
sweet Emily and I can't go

That makes me choke up.

Amazing Grace, on the bag pipes.
100% agree, Amazing Grace on the bag pipes. Always at funerals of course when it's the most touching. I get goosebumps and choked up at the same time.

I would also like to add "I will Remember You" by Sarah McLachlan. The song was played at the funeral for an uncle of mine, and I cannot listen to that song to this day.

Although I don't care for the rest of the song really. It's okay, but nothing spectacular.

Except for Holly.
Holly is amazing, I love Holly
and on topic, another song that fits teh bill
Holly McNarland - Water... I thouroughly enjoy the version from the "Live at the great hall" show in toronto, complete with cello

Happy Bruce songs:
Dancing in the Dark, Cadillac Ranch.

And that's pretty much it, even like "Darlington County" and "Hungry Heart" are pretty sad songs when you listen to 'em.

Gotta have Nothing man by Pearl jam in here.......

once divided...nothing left to subtract...
some words when spoken...can't be taken back...
walks on his own...with thoughts he can't help thinking...
future's above...but in the past he's slow and sinking...
caught a bolt 'a lightnin'...cursed the day he let it go...
nothingman...
nothingman...
isn't it something?
nothingman...

she once believed...in every story he had to tell...
one day she stiffened...took the other side...
empty stares...from each corner of a shared prison cell...
one just escapes...one's left inside the well...
and he who forgets...will be destined to remember...

oh, she don't want him...
oh, she won't feed him...after he's flown away...
oh, into the sun...ah, into the sun...

Violent femmes - Country Death Song

XTC - Dear God,
not sure if I'd call it sad, but I can't help but stop what I'm doing and reflect on things when I hear it.

Most songs by Great Lakes Swimmers are pretty melancholy. Their sound is pretty sparse, with lots of reverb (Tony recorded his first album essentially solo in a silo). Often been compared to Nick Drake, and Neil Young (After the Goldrush era). They played in Calgary a few months ago with Justin Rutledge and jokingly billed it the Magical Misery Tour. Suggested songs:

Moving Pictures, Silent Films
I Will Never See the Sun
Various Stages
Song for the Angels

I also find Tournament of Hearts by the Weakerthans to be pretty sad.

Also a classic from the Jam - The Bitterest Pill.

If I'm feeling nostalgic for home, I find that The Green Green Grass of Home always brings a tear.

Just so everyone is aware this is NOT a Johnny Cash song. This was originally written and recorded by Trent Reznor/NIN.

Good cover though.

Good cover though.
Johnny's version is exponentially more sad/melancholy than the NIN version.
