Totally serious and it's first hand information.

Companies who send employees up there are concerned for their welfare, shocking I know!

95% male? Maybe in a work camp. Where about 10,000 people reside, well outside of the Ft. McMurray town site.

Try 55% male. 45% female.

A city of roughly 65,000 is bound to have a few criminals lurking about.

It's nice to become informed before I make a post.

No thanks,

I get to go to the exotic NE US (Connecticut / Upstate New York) for a few months later this year.

Thats quite enough.

I have tons of relatives in Ft Mac. Both the town and in Camps.

I certainly wouldn't be lonely.......or sober....

Just wondering where you got those numbers from. There was a special on Global a couple of weeks ago on Fort Mac, and they had the percentage somewhere around 73% male. Granted as mentioned the work camps do skew the numbers, but the fact still remains that most of the transplanted workers are male.

Just wondering if Global is wrong; or if I heard it wrong.

2006 census. Sensational media reporting perhaps. I will concede that the transplanted workers skew those numbers, however, I don't by into fear tactics through sensationalism.

My point is that if I don't know the truth I don't make things up or repeat things I heard from someone on the C-Train platform while I was eavesdropping.

Once again...Ignorance is bliss...

I'm confused. It's really hard to tell from this thread what kind of a town it is. You've got half the posters saying it's a rough town that isn't very pleasant to live in, and that there is lots of fighting and testosterone floating around, and the other half seem complety offended, and claim these posters are ignorant and embelishing the facts, and that it's no different than any other town.

Go North young man, go north.

When you get there be sure to take notes of your perilous adventure into the great abyss. This void of social order they call Ft. McMurray. When you return you can regale of your triumphant conquering of the mighty drunken scaffolder, and his apprentice soldier henchman.

Be sure not to fall into the arms of the Lot Lizards that are sure to lurk and steal all your worldly possessions.

Sounds like a fairy tale to me...

And no women have been accosted or assaulted ever in Calgary or Edmonton? Honestly, have you been there? I'm female, I go all the time, I go out by myself at night and it's FINE. Like I said, I'm sure there's bad areas, just like every other city, but I would never warn one of my girlfriends to "not go out after dark".

Also - 95% of the town is not male. It's certainly a noticably higher percentage then, say, Calgary. But let's not go crazy on the rumor-mongering.

Sorry, but if you've never been there how could you know?

Don't get me wrong, I do not like Fort McMurray, which is why I don't live there. The worst place ever? Jeez, little overboard. I guess if you live in the oilcan motel above diggers, you may not want to go out after dark by yourself, but you can say the same if you lived above the Cecil here in Calgary. From the age of 13 I went out almost every weekend, when I moved back last year I went out almost every weekend, lots of times to the dreaded evil bar, and guess what? I've never even gotten in a fight, don't get me wrong, it can be rough there, but just use common sense and you should be fine. If you live in an area like Thickwood, going out after dark, is not a risk whatsoever.

I do feel safer walking in downtown Calgary at night than in Fort McMurray, but there really is no reason to be walking around downtown Fort McMurray after dark, there is nothing down there.

All in all I agree with Mr.MastadonFarm, it can be a fun place. As much as I don't like it there I had a lot of good times living there, and always have a good time when I go back. There are some good people there, and there are some bad ones, just like anywhere else. For me, I just prefer living in a larger city, there are just fewer I like to do up there like watching live music, and snowboarding.. It might be a little rougher due to some of the workers who are up there, but thats to be expected.

If you have any specific questions it would be good to ask Mr.MastadonFarm, Captain Sensible, or myself, not sure who else has lived up there for a long time, but we all spend the majority of our lives in Fort McMurray. Good luck.
