Okay are you a stathead?: RC/G 02, 03, 04, 05, 06, 07 :

Jones: 6.6, 5.9, 5.3, 6.5, 6.9, 4.2
Beltran: 6.2, 8.2, 7.8, 4.8, 8.8, 7.0
Wells: 4.6, 7.0, 5.4, 5.1, 7.0, 4.2

Okay, Beltran is a lot better than I gave him credit for. Jones has a slight advatage as his average yearly RC/G is 5.9 compared to Wells' 5.55 meaning his VORP would likely also be slightly higher. Still with Wells being 2 years younger and nearer the prime age of 27, I'd expect him to bounce back closer to his career seasons than Jones will.

Not to mention Wells is coming off a poor season due to his shoulder injury. This will lower his stat's.

The one key stat for Wells is he has won the Golden Glove three times in the last four years.

And Yes, I love stats.

Well, the one thing about that list is that Beltran blows everyone else out of the water. I kinda chuckled when he got that contract, thinking it was largely the Boras factor, but now it seems like a nice discount when compared with Wells, Jones and Hunter.

See, Jones has been a more consistent performer over the last couple of years especially when compared to Wells. Wells on the other hand has had 3 pretty average seasons and 2 really good ones. IMHO Jones will have a better overall year than Wells. He still is only 30 years old, while Wells on the other hand is tough to predict - watching him last year, you cannot blame that all on injury, rather than his own idiocy. He swung at the exact same pitches all year (high fastballs and low breaking stuff). He lead the league in Infield flies.

If Rios played CF next year, he'd very likely be a higher VORP player than if Wells played CF again, and at a much cheaper contract. Stuff like this just rubs me the wrong way, because this is just poor money management for a middle market team. It is all about stretching your dollar in order to compete with the Bostons/NYs.

You could replace Wells' production with a platoon of Johnson/Lind in RF and Rios in CF most likely, or at least come close to it or at worst have 13 more million dollars to spend upgrading another position of need.

You give the big money to the best, the good money to the good and the crap to the minor leaguers - you just can't settle for overpaying for average or overpaying for good. Wells is just good. Not great, just good. He doesn't have the track record to warrant otherwise.
