The Boston Red Sox refused to take the field for their final spring training game in Florida on Wednesday and threatened to boycott their flight to Japan for their season openers unless their coaches and other staff are paid for the trip.
The players are getting a $40K stipend for this trip!?!

Wow.

I thought it was the coaches who were promised the money, and now are told they won't get it...

Yeah, it is.

Manager Terry Francona and his players were upset after learning staff members are not going to get a $40,000 stipend. The Boston Herald reported players insisted part of their agreement to make the trip included the fee — for them and the coaches.
I like seeing players do this to support the coaches, but I still can't get over the fact they get a stipend like that.

I hate comments like this. Read the article. The players voted whether to go to Japan and one of the conditions was that the coaches and training staff would receive a stipend for making the trip too.

The amount of money and exposure MLB and the Red Sox are getting for this is worth the $40K stipend per player/coach/staff.

$40000 is peanuts. MLB makes a gajillion dollars.

Great that the players are sticking up for their coaches.

Exactly. When the commissioner makes $15M and has a private jet at his disposal and with the exposure MLB is getting to the Asian market (to compete with the NBA), $40K is peanuts.

Relative to the MLB fee structure, you are correct.

Relative to me, it is a crazy amount of money for a simple stipend. Just another thing that makes baseball feel more and more distant from me.

Can't make that comparison.

We pay to watch them work, they don't pay to watch us work

You mean you haven't had Peyton cheering you on at work?

And I've never made multi-millions of dollars so I can only judge it from the perspective I know. I agree that it is a free market and they get what they deserve. What I don't agree with is when they hold the fans hostage. How about people at that final spring training game? The people like Oilfan who wanted to watch the game on TV? They are the ones who are affected by what is, as you describe it, "peanuts".

You're right. Fans have the ultimate vote. Some fans are blasting the Red Sox this morning and will never watch their games again!

But in general, you know fans always come back. Because the product of "sports" is so appealling.

Oilfan: Are you really going to watch at 4 in the morning!?
