I don't know why people are celebrating today as St Patrick's Day
It was on Saturday the 15th
Quote:
The Catholic Church will move St Patrick's Day 2008 after discovering it clashes with a key day in the Church's calendar.
Bishops discovered the Irish patron saint's feast on March 17 clashes with the second day of Holy Week next year.
Church rules decree the saint's feast day does not rank as highly as the Monday before Easter and therefore has to be moved.

Happy St. Patty's Day everyone, it's my favourite day of the year!! Too bad I won't be able to tie one on like in previous years(or like last year, that was a gooder), but when it falls on a Monday, your options are pretty limited(especially when everyone wusses out on you because its a weekday. I'd still be down). But I'll still go for a pint tonight, just to say I did. Green beer and Irish drinking music, is anything better?

You seem to be in the majority of people then. When I moved up to Edmonton for school, I couldn't believe how hard it was finding people that actually celebrated it. I remember asking people if they were going out for it a couple years back, they didn't even know what day it was!! You guys are missin out on a hell of a day, it's seriously probably my favourite day of the whole damn year. I think the reason I like it so much is because the first few years we went out for it, I always had an awesome, awesome time. So now its just turned into a tradition.
btw the worst is when you go to a bar that doesn't "get it". Last year we went to a so-called Irish pub, and a) they didnt have green beer, and b) they turned off the Irish music by 8pm and just played top 40 crap. Weak sauce!

Edmonton is a crazy, mixed-up and backwards place.
Hit up a University Bar man. St. Patrick's day at The Den is an Epic adventure.
I used to go every year, you had to be in there by 11:00 just to get a place to site and you'd camp out at your table until 2 or 3 in the morning.
Servers would come and go, thered be like 4 of them while you were at your table and you have to keep clearing your tab, so it never seemed that expensive.
But man was it an adventure, along with people you'd met once or twice in class, complete strangers would come by, everybody is hammered.
You could always leave 2 or 3 people at your table and run around the bar or go outside, cause mischief, break stuff and then run back into the bar and continue to get hammered.
So many good times. St. Paddy's day is a blast. But I have to work tomorrow so it'll be a couple pints of green beer and some Guinness and then home for me.

You could get killed for a stunt like that in some places.
Sometimes its all about finding the right location to really get to love this day.
Same with Keith's Birthday, you have to be in the right place, or it just doesnt quite work.
My sister is in freakin' Belfast. Lucky.

Yes, you do know your dives. The Pointe was our favorite hang-out on the Red Mile, but sadly has shut it's doors.
Perhaps we should pool our resources and revive it as the Calgarypuck Man Cave.

Ya I hear that about the college bars. I haven't lived in C-town since '04, but I went to Mount Royal for a couple of years in '03 and '04 and we hit up the Lib during the afternoon on St. Pattys. It was awesome. There were even people walking around the halls with full mugs of green beer, outstanding! I go to the UofA right now, but I dont have class on Mondays and its a bit of a far bus ride(actually two, I live on the other side of town) so its hard to justify goin all the way down there when none of my buddies from the U are down to drink today anyways, unfortunately. If I had a class today I'd probably just recruit a couple people from there to come down for a pint, those always end up bein s***shows.
I agree with you that you just gotta find a good pub for St. Patty's Day and just stay the course every year. When I was livin in Calgary, that place was the Barley Mill on MacLeod Tr and about Canyon Meadows Dr. That place was my first 3 or 4 years of celebrating St. Pattys, and pretty much the reason why I love it so much now. Then the Bull & Finch bought it out, and it was never the same since.

I certainly do. The last time I was there I was watching a friend's show and the bartender was doing a line of coke off the bar with a waitress. It doesnt get much worse than The Point.
I remember having a great time running across the street hammered with the staff to cause trouble over at Bob the Fish just to piss them off and then running back and having the whole bar deny it when their bouncer came over after he clearly saw us running into the bar.

We'd have the place to ourselves. Nothing but hockey on the TVs, no Nucks or Oilfans allowed. Maybe a special CP ID card.

Its turned into something else twice I think since then. It is not very cool anymore.

Okay,
I'm a pretty big proponent of doing up St. Patrick's Day, properly.
Including spending the entire day on Saturday (the right day anway) playing rugby and drinking beer.
Woo Hoo.
However, green beer pisses me off to no end.
Proper Irish beer is Black, and nothing you can do to it will change it green.
St. Patrick's Day without Guiness isn't worth celebrating!

Fair enought.
Although these also fall into the category of beers that can't be made green no matter how hard you try.

Ya I could see how many who celebrate it traditionally would feel this way, green beer does seem like somewhat of a hokey add-on. Still, I love the green beer. Besides, nothin tops off a great St. Patty's Day than when you crap green the next day...
