Default Boy wants to return to school as a girl

Quote:
HIGHLANDS RANCH – The issue of being transgender usually pops up with students in high school. However, a 2nd grade boy wants to dress as a girl and be addressed with a girl's name.

"As a public school system, our calling is to educate all kids no matter where they come from, what their background is, beliefs, values, it doesn't matter," said Whei Wong, Douglas County Schools spokesperson.

Wong says the staff at one of Douglas County's schools is preparing to accommodate the student and answer questions other students might have. In order to protect the child as much as possible, 9NEWS has chosen not to reveal his school or other names that might identify the child.

Sorry, but this is screwed up.

You're what, 7-8 years old in Grade 2....and I doubt this kid even properly understands the difference between boy and girl.

Many transgendered people realize very young that they are not "right". For the individual it is important to start living to their true identity as soon as possible.

Agreed.

I do think though, given the age of boy that the adults involved be very careful to be totally impartial.

While a grade 2 child may know they are "not right", I don't think they are emotionally or intellectually equipped to deal with the raw facts of the transgendered community.

What I'm getting at is other kids asking things like "So when are you going to chop it off?"

Would this kid use the girls washroom and change rooms? It might feel right for him, but the real girls might not be comfortable with it.

I think it's fine as the transgender need to be recognized as their true gender. It's very important for them.

I like the parents saying "I don't want to explain to my child why a boy wants to be a girl." Yes, god forbid you teach your children about tolerance of differences between people.

Someone shouldn't be letting their kids watch 'The Riches'.

From my psyc courses, it's good that the famliy and the child are actively seeking counselling from a therapist since the child is so young. Also it is important to note that there is still time for a child to "change their mind" since they have a couple years before more permenant course of action take place (altering puberty and such). Lastly, perhaps it is better off to start young, since if she does decide to go all the way, hormone changes and such are much easier before puberty and she'll look much more feminine than if she started to transition later in life.

Funny to note, the family is from Colorado, and I think it was Denver that is labelled as the "Sex Change Capital of America"

IMHO any child should be able to identify themselves as whatever gender the child chooses.

It is not up to us or the school district or the parents or anybody other than the person in question.

This kind of topic is kinda interesting. It's like what I noticed at the store the other day. There was a "girl" there, but man she looked like a guy even right down to the way she stood and held herself. VERY masculine posturing and appreance but also a woman. She was clearly trying to look the part of a guy as well.

Anyone ever notice that, somone of a particular sex who clearly seems to be meant to be the other sex? Is this kinda the same idea as homosexuality? You can almost put them into certain categories

Female Homosexuality:
The usual lesbian - both girls are clearly girls, girlish behavour but dig only girls
the "butch" lesbian - both are girls but have heavy masculine features (short hair, masculine stance, heavier set, kinda gruff

Male Homsexuality:
The straight looking gay guys - Both are clearly men, dress like your "normal guy" looks like they would be into women but dig other guys
The very gay, gay guys - Clearly guys but display alot of feminine tendencies, walk/talk like women, flashier dressed, but also dig guys. Resemble women in a lotof ways but are men.

It's crazy stuff.

Not really, although the two can be combined in one person.

Transgendered is a person of one sex who identifies - in every aspect of their lives - as the oposite sex. Sexual preference has no part of being transgendered.

Homosexuality is being physically attracted to members of the same sex.

It never ceases to amaze me how much some people care about other people's sexuality. How about everyone just does their own thing? If someone wants to be transgendered... what's it to you?

Oh the irony.

My take... who cares? If he wants to, let him. Either it'll stick, or it won't. But at least he'll find out something about himself.

I have a boy in grade two. He's at the stage where he doesn't like girls his age but is always commenting on how "hot" some older girl or women is. If one of his classmates came dressed as a girl he would find them weird and no doubt express that inclination. This would in turn cause the "socially progressive" faculty at his school to attempt to teach him that his feelings are misguided and that what he finds as abnormal is good and should be praised. At this point I would be stepping in. I send my children to school to learn reading and arithmetic. I don't send them to school to be programed into finding the unnatural as a positive alternative.

A seven year old boy is just beginning to determine who he is and who he wants to be. All kinds of ideas pop into their heads. It is a parental responsibility to direct these ideas, encouraging the positive and discouraging the negative. This responsibility does not belong to the state.

No one is saying a boy wanting to be a girl is "good" or "should be praised". It just is. What's wrong with something letting some be as it is.

I agree its a parent's resposibility to direct the child as to what is positive and what is negative. But I don't see why this is negative.

If it were my child, I would explain to him some people are different that he is. Sure, we may think its weird, but not everyone is like we are. And one of the great things about our soceity is we let people be what they want to be.

If my boy at that age wanted to go to school and be a girl...I'd slap the girl out of him until he wanted to be a boy again!!!

It's probably not a matter of "wanting" to be transgendered, but probably genetic.
