Default My story

When I proposed to my wife, we were in the living room of the empty house that we had just bought together.

It had been a busy day with cleaning & wallpapering etc, since the move from our dinky apartment was just a day away. We were scheduled to go to a quick dinner & a movie just to relax a bit. She started getting pretty crabby because we were late, and why did I have to go to the new house to drop off stupid beer for the moving guys, yadda yadda yadda, etc.

I walked out of the kitchen with a little basket containing a Windstone Unicorn hatching out of an egg (she collects these figurines) saying "I got something for you". I had tied the ring around its neck with a little ribbon, and when she noticed the ring I asked the question.

After an emotional "yes", we went for our supper and movie, and I had a fiancee whose mood had increased a hundred-fold.

Going on 9 years now.

However, I'm not even comfortable bringing an $300 iPod along to such places, let along a ring of substantial value. I know insurance covers these things but why take the risk? I asked if the jeweller could make a "fake" ring with non precious materials but they said the labor would make it really expensive (the real ring has an intricate design)

Should I?

- Get a simplified "fake" version of the ring?
- Don't propose overseas and wait to do it locally?
- Propose with the real ring in Syria and Jordan?

Thanks - time is ticking before we go on vacation. I'm sure some of you have proposed overseas and I'd love to hear what you did.

Did anyone do the "ask the father thing"? Her dad died some years ago, so not sure if I should default to her mom or brother? I'm leaning to skipping this all together.
Get a simplified fake, or just a really cheap walmart fake ring. I don't think it needs to look like the real one at all. This way she'll be so excited the whole time to come home and see what her ring looks like.

If you bring the real one you will be worried sick about it the entire trip. You'll be spending every 5 minutes feeling in whatever hiding place it's in making sure it's still there and facing many questions from your girlfriend about why you're so tense when you should be relaxed and having a good time on vacation with her.

If you two are big into game shows, you can try what this guy did.

Mine was pretty simple, our first night in Myrtle Beach, we drove so I had the ring with me for the first 10 hour drive, hotel stay and the final 6 hour jaunt in Myrtle. We got settled in our room, had a few drinks, went to the pier and came back to the room. It had started to rain, but I was far too antsy to wait so I asked her if she wanted to go for a walk. She said no because it was raining, I said it would be fun to go for a walk in the warm rain (it was really just a drizzle) at night on the beach in May (still cold at night in London).

I had been bugging her for days about our future saying things like, "are you sure you want to be with me" "you really want to spend the rest of your life with me?" etc. Then after about five minutes, I just stopped walking, and pulled the ring box out in one motion so that when she turned it was the first thing she saw. She was ecstatic.

I sure did, I just thought it was the "traditional thing to do". I was more nervous asking her parents for permission then actually asking her to marry me.

Her dad never really did say yes, he sort of just sat there with a goofy grin on his face

my parents loved that my boyfriend approached them about proposing, before he asked me and they are not super traditional people...i think it's a gesture that is no longer expected but definitely appreciated.

I knew it was coming, but didn't know how. I had gone last minute to my moms, to help bake banana bread. I came home a couple hours later to our apartment, and he had spelled out will you with roses at the front door. It was very simple, but completely unexpected. I think that was what made it most memorable.

Nothing went right for me when I proposed. I orginally wanted to propose in Banff on top of Sulpher mountian where we went for our first date. When we got to banff she didn't want to go up and wanted to continue to drive west to BC. Of course I paniced and said ok. Next thing I know she wanted to stop at the Enchanted Forest because she had never been and had driven by it a ton. I figured why the hell not maybe I can find something in the forest that would be worthy. As we are going thorugh the forest we came to a little exhibit called the wedding party with a bunch of penguins. Just as I was rehearsing in my head something to say she said "This would be a person place to propose". I totally paniced and did a nervous laugh and we moved on (hindsight I kind of wished I proposed then to call her bluff because she had no idea it was). Needless to say a couple more ideas got kyboshed which made me more nervous. In the end with 2 minutes to midnight before our dating anniversary date I woke her said a sappy speal. She never saw it coming and when I explained my efforts during the day she just laughed and apologized.

During the whole wedding experience the proposal for me was by far the hardest part. Nothing is worse then having the ring in your pocket trying to find a time when nothing is going as planned. I swear I was checking my pocket every 2 minutes to make sure the ring was still there.

The coolest one or most original I heard of when a girlfriend was waiting for her boyfriend at the airport, after getting off the plane he had 12 strangers each give her a rose and then he dropped down on one knee in the airport....
