Ring of thieves skimmed $5.5M from Albertans!
http://www.cbc.ca/canada/calgary/sto.../atm-scam.html
Anyone else get caught up in this?.....
The wife and I had $983.00 stolen from our account
We got it back a week later. My wife said when she went into the bank to change her card there where people lined out the door doing the same thing.

As money gets more convenient and easy to spend, it gets easier to steal. Thats rough for you, at least you got your money back. I gotta try and go back to cash.

Change your pin evey 3 weeks? It probably is the smart thing to do. But I can envision myself filling up with fuel and then not remembering what my current pin is.

They got $800.00 from my account some weeks ago. The CIBC fraud unit took their sweet time fixing the issue for me but then again they had a ton of people just like me that had to be helped.

I was at an identity theft seminar a while back and the presenter suggested using credit cards instead of Interac -- that way if your card gets skimmed, it is just a charge on your credit card (instead of actually losing money from your account)...

I carry cash on me since I hate up holding lines while my Interac process goes through. For big ticket items ( >100$) I use a credit card. Aside from using it at a gas pump or atm, I very rarely exceed my interact uses per month.

This happened to me a couple years ago. They got $1200 from my TDCanadatrust account. I was in Toronto visiting someone and I got a call one morning from their security dept. asking if I had withdrawn $1200 the previous night. No.
Long story short, they surmised that my card had been double swiped at a convenience store and then I didn't cover up my pin while punching it in. Therefore, it was my fault and I could take a flying leap.
I told the person that when I use debit, I pick up the pinpad hold it relatively close to my body, angle it upward so that the teller can't see, and punch it in.
She tells me that it was probably someone looking over my shoulder. I told her that I'm pretty aware of whose standing around me during this type of thing, and she comes back with the whole "they're really good" rant.
I finally cornered her when I asked her how I was supposed to guard my pin from the teller, people beside me and behind me, and the hidden camera in the roof and STILL be able to type in the pin. She stammered a bit, then I told her that newspapers love stories about big mean banks ripping off poor young individuals.
It took 6 weeks (they had to "investigate" first), but that 2 minutes of arguing got me my money back the same day.

How else will they maintain their rediculous profit margins..? People bitch about the oil and gas industry but I think banks are the biggest theives of all..

You wouldn't believe the things I said in the days and weeks before. I had a decent amount of cash in their bank (between 10 and 20k) that I threatened to pull out. Nothing. I knew my dad had a respectable amount of cash in his account (more than 100k), and a mortgage. I told them that I'd get him to desert them. Nothing.
"Too bad, screw you. You must have been careless with the pin because they got it within three tries..."
Nuts, I tell ya. The newspaper threat did it. Either that, or she was sick of me calling every day and bitching about it.
A few weeks later, my mom taped an episode of W5 for me. Made my blood boil. They interviewed a high up bank guy who admitted that the reason that they do not make ATMs and debiting more secure is because right now (at the time) their losses are nominal compared to the cost of upgrading all their hardware and software. Motherfudgers. Yeah, your costs are nominal because you don't pay unless the person whines for weeks and threatens to use the media.

And that's why banks have a great CTA (Cover Their A**) and a bunch of lawyers to enforce it -- it's the booklet full of legalese in really small print that says that if you violate what's in that booklet, the bank is not responsible...
so if the bank ever asks if you've written down your PIN number, and you say "Yes" or if they ask if you shared the PIN number with a spouse or anyone else and you say "Yes", you've violated the agreement and it is not their problem anymore...

In the identity theft seminar I attended, it was mentioned that banks are looking at ways to make the customer pay for the costs...so this would not surprise me at all

I used to use debit all the time. Every purchase I made was with debit - upwards of 100 a month. Now I dont use debit at all. Credit cards for everything and I carry a small amount of cash for places that dont take credit cards.

Yeah, this happened to my wife and I about a month ago. There were two withdrawals from our account for 500 each. We did a little panic thing, then went into our bank. Thankfully, my wife used to work at this bank and we were able to get out money back instantly, but from what I gather, normally the process can take a few weeks to get your money back.
Also, when we were at the bank, the person we talked to said that lately there had been a ton of frauds. Even while we were there, another couple came in and the same thing had happened to them

The bank was awsome about it for us, but we didn't really need the money "TODAY" kinda thing. I imagin it would be a real problem if it was my mortgage I just deposited and thats all that was in there. Or if I was a single mom and it took a week to get back my food money...
The bank called us to ask us if there was an issue. Withdrawls of 501.50 and 481.50. On the bright side looks like the service fee screws the crooks outta 17 dollars in this case...
We found out from a friend who worked at the store, in our case it was from a transaction at one of the stores on 130th SE...

Yeah at first it kinda pissed me off that they would not tell us where it occurred. I can kinda of understand that the store it happened at would not be very popular anymore. But still, I would have liked to know where it happened.
