Coldest winter in 15 years
TORONTO - After years of warmer-than-normal winters that spurred constant talk of global warming, winter this year is expected to be the coldest in almost 15 years and should remind everyone of what real Canadian cold feels like, Environment Canada said Friday.
With the exception of only small pockets of northern Canada and southwestern Ontario, this December through February is forecast to be one of the harshest winters in recent memory across the country, said senior climatologist David Phillips.
"It is somewhat remarkable that we're seeing the same situation from coast to coast to almost coast - from Vancouver Island to Bonavista, Nfld., we're showing the country as being colder than normal," Phillips said.
"The last time Canada had a significantly cold winter was back in 1994, more than a decade ago, and this may very well rival that one in terms of coldness."

Celebrated Square Root Day
|
I love cold winters, makes you really appreciate summer. That, and I was getting tired of only having a few good days to play outdoor hockey in the winter. Last winter it felt like the guys would flood the ice, it would be good for one day, and then it would warm up and melt for a week, then they'd flood it again....... and so on.

They can't predict what will happen next week, let alone for an entire season.

I've found Farmer's Almanacs to be relatively decent in predicting weather patterns.

My old man's a superintendent at a golf course and swears by the Farmer's Almanac. It's eerily accurate. I still remember a couple years ago during that extremely mild '05 winter, in early February when it was gorgeous out, he said on March 19th we were gonna get absolutely dumped on. As of March 16th there was still nothing...by March 18th, absolutely dumped on, blizzard conditions. The fact the Farmer's Almanac predicted a snowstorm almost two months before and ended up only being one day off was remarkable, I'll never doubt it again.
Sure as hell alot better than Environment Canada...

Perhaps they should define "fair".
And I'm not sure if the "Old Farmers Almanac" is the same thing, but
Quote:
|
This study found that the national regional forecast for Winter had both the temperature and precipitation correct only about 13% of the time and Summer forecast was correct just 6% of the time.

http://ggweather.com/farmers/2005/index.htm
And also, from PBS.org:
Quote:
|
In the October 1981 issue of Weatherwise, pages 212-215, John E. Walsh and David Allen performed a check on the accuracy of 60 monthly forecasts of temperature and precipitation from the Old Farmer's Almanac at 32 stations in the U.S. They found that 50.7 percent of the monthly temperature forecasts and 51.9 percent of the precipitation forecasts verified with the correct sign. These may be compared with the 50 percent success rate expected by chance.

Don't worry, Calgary has a white Halloween more often than a white Christmas (although this year there was no snow for Halloween, so it might be Christmas's turn).
I hate snow. I hate winter. I love most everything about living in Calgary, but winter is not on that list.

My co-workers are blaming me.
I bought a house with a pool in July and we had one of the wettest Augusts on record.
The house has a double driveway and we had one of the snowiest Novembers in years.

I haven't missed the mediocre type cold winters of recent years in Canada, but I'd kind of like to be back for a really cold and snowy one.
Maybe, just for a couple of weeks or something.
