There's a single mom in the contest too, maybe she has a need for the prize also. But really, since this is a windfall to whomever wins, wouldn't it be best that the one(s) most in need win? This is not random, its a popularity contest.
My only concern with the contest is, given the amount involved and that you can vote as often as you want, it makes sense for the contestants themselves to just sit there all day voting for themselves. Could lead to a bizarre number of votes and mean that only the most perseverant contestant, who didn't sleep, wins.
EDIT: Okay, I've read the profiles now, still, terminal illness presents a much greater need than anything else... some sad stories in a couple of those though.
