seriously! i used my wife's expensive crud and she commented on the hair. not something she ever says so it really surprised me.

and take it easy on the alcohol gels and hair sprays. alcohol is not good for the hair.

and with split endz, can't you just spend 6 months in a leaky boat?

Or if expensive lotions and shampoos don't fit your budget, you can use plain old margarine to get your hair looking healthy and shiny. Once I started using it, I realized I could never go back. See for yourself.

Also, any tips on facial hair products? My beard is so wirey and coarse and I want something to soften it up. I'd been wanting to start a thread to ask that, but didn't have the sand.

Head and Shoulders shampoo. Lather, rinse, repeat. Use every day and you are well on your way to facial hair soft as a baby's bottom.

It also can lift tar out of carpet.

So don't use it on your head. Just your face.

I've actually been using Head and Shoulders for a while now, but so far all I get out of it is a tingly chin. Well, it also makes me look like Davey Jones from Pirates of the Carribean while I'm in the shower... Once it's dry tho, same old goat.

Seriously, is there anyone on earth who is scarier-looking than Carrot Top? Dude looks like what you'd get if you stuck a clown head on Andre the Giant's body. Someone needs to take the steroids out of his magic trunk.

On-topic, a hairdresser once told me it is a good idea NOT to wash your hair every day because the natural oils your hair and scalp produce are actually vital and beneficial; especially in a dry climate like Calgary's, washing daily can be very harmful.

Yes I've heard this as well. I've heard other cultures around the world think we're crazy with the amount we shower. Although if your scalp produces oil at the insane amount mine does, you really don't have much of a choice. If I go a day or two without showering my head is itchy as hell.

And to deal with the initial post, I did a LOT of stupid stuff to my hair when I was 18-20, and its basically been damaged ever since. It's gotten better over the years, but its still not where it used to be, I'm pretty sure I've permanently damaged it. Just be sure to use "extra-softening" type conditioners(I'd tell you the brand but frankly I cant even remember what it was anymore). Also, keep your hair short. It looks fine when it's short, only when I try to grow it out can you tell its damaged.

heard it was the weight and such putting extra strain on the follicle causing the growth to slow. don't know how much truth there is to that.

when i've had my hair at different lengths it does seem to hold true that shorter hair grows faster... but that might just be perception - an extra inch of hair when you only have half and inch of hair to start with is quite a bit. adding an inch of hair to someone who already has hair down to mid-back doesn't seem like its changing much at all.

I was also told by my buddy's wife(who cut my hair) that when you have split ends like I did/do, it's important to keep cutting your hair reguarly because the split will slowly keep working its way up the shaft until it makes its way to the follicle, thus damaging your hair more-so.

aveda is probably one of the best, If you want to see a difference you need to spend the dollars, trust me it makes a HUGE difference

You are right in that hair grows all the time. Split ends can continue to split though, going further up the hair shaft and impeding healthy growth if left unchecked. Too much brushing or the incorrect brush for your hair type will make the issue worse.

Facial hair is different than the hair on your head. Your beard is wirey and coarse - that's genetics and you can't change it except to shave it off. You can try a couple of these ideas though to help though I haven't any idea what kind of success you'll have.

The first idea may seem a bit weird, but Aveeno puts our a shave cream called "Positively Smooth". You'll find it in the women's hair removal section. It claims to make hair softer and thinner over time, so you'll have to shave less. This is a great idea for women's legs, but because you're beard is heavy, I highly doubt you'll have to shave less. It might make your hair growth a little softer though.

The other idea is based on what makes hair soft - straightness. Women with curly hair have less shine and less softness than women with straight hair. (Genetics again) I think you could use a straightening balm the minute you get out of the shower, while your beard is wet. Apply it like you would any other hair product. Blowdrying while combing is probably out of the question, so you'll have to watch that the product you choose states that you can let it air dry and still have no crunchies.

Nothing but Proctor and Gamble does mass appeal like no one else. Like any giant in the cosmetic industry, they segment the industry into low, mid and high end customers. High end products generally have ingredients that add to the "experience" of applying them - they smell better, the fragrance lasts longer, feels nicer and they work faster but the basic ingredients are very similar - even if the low end products are watered down versions.

Take L'oreal for example. Low end - Maybelline and Garnier products $8-$15. Mid - L'oreal $10 - $30. High end - La Roche Posay $25 and up.

P&G has Herbal Essences on the low end and Infusium in the mid range. Infusium will work better faster, but you'd likely get the same results with long term use of Herbal Essences if you're on more of a budget.

I would say I have fairly good hair to begin with but ive had times where it does get to dry to style. I can agree on the not using shampoo every day thing as I know it helps and some of the natural oils that constantly washing your hair removes help give your hair more life. Weird to see men talking about their hair this way but face it we must look good for the ladies!
