Punishment should involve the shoveling of the sidewalks before sun break for each of the victims for the coming winter. And reparations to be made by the PARENTS.
So sayeth Judge Llama64.

Lousy hooligans. I blame the parents. These rapscallions should be at home looking at hard core porn.

I actually think that this is a great idea. While they're at it, they can shovel the bus shelters they hit too.

Report says 8:15 pm, report says 16 year olds taken into custody. That is not real late for kids of that age to be outside.
I do not blame the parents since I do not know them nor do I know the circumstances of the home these kids grew up in. There are many kids who grow up in perfectly good homes, who grow up having been enrolled by their parents in many activities, who for some reason or other choose to walk on the wrong side of the street. It is just too easy to automatically generalize and blame the parents.
I do however believe that the parents should make reparations since the kids are still their responsibility. And there should be some kind of manual labor doled out to the culprits too.

Ah yes the old 'Idle hands are the work of the devil' arguement. I think this incident stems more from a lack of respect for other people's property, including public property. You could make them busy as hell, but eventually there will be someday where they have other opportunities to wreck havoc on other's property. The key is to make sure that when they have ample opportunity they don't actually want to ruin other people's property.
This is something that has to be taught better by parents. This lack or respect leads to socialist thinking when children are older in which they feel entitled to a 'fair share' of something they own no part of nor took any steps to create.

I also think that is a wicked idea. I sound like an oldtimer saying this , but good, honest work will cause these kids to smarten up quickly because they will realize that there is no benefit to vandalism. Also, if the parents have to pay up, they will certanly pay more attention to what their kids are doing.
On a side note: The city has to do something about these bus shelters. They get smashed to bits all over town, and that glass can't be cheap to replace. Perhaps changing them to be metallic would help.

this i don't agree with as its not always the parents fault. the 'kids' are old enough to know better. the 'kids' are old enough to take responsibility for their actions. the 'kids' are old enough to get a job and work to pay back the damages.

it always the parents fault...cleary the kids here arent "old" enough to know how stupid this is or take responsibility because if they were taking responsibility than they prob wouldnt have done it in the first place...who teaches this to them?

A "kid" is a "kid" until the age of 18. Until their 18th birthday they are the property of their primary caregiver. The caregiver holds all legal responsibility for the "kid" until that time. So, whether or not you personally think they are old "enough" to take responsibility, the caregiver must be held accountable for their "property".
The kids should not face monetary repercussions from society at their age. The parents though may pass those fine on to their kids as they see fit. It's important though that parents face some form of punishment so that they can react to correct their own kids behavior. If the accountability is not enforced, nothing will be done and these kids stand at a higher risk to learn nothing and travel further down the path of criminal behavior.

I believe a large portion of the problems faced by society today in regards to youth crime stems from people treating people under the age of 18 in an adult manner. To expect a 16 year old to comprehend the consequences of their actions in the same way a 26 year old would is dangerous and really does a disfavor to the person.

Fine, then they can't drive until they are 18.
Can't have your cake and eat it too.
