Go to Travel Cuts, hands down. When I went travelling around Australasia last year, I managed to get a flight plan of Calgary-LA-Singapore-Auckland-Sydney-Singapore-Tokyo-LA-Calgary for just under $2000, and it was on Singapore Airlines too which is a great carrier to travel with.

The reason it is expensive, I believe, is probably because not only have fuel taxes gone up, but also because the closer you get to your departure (even if months in advance), you're booking for the holiday season. So my advice? Book as soon as you can, or try and depart in June or August rather than July.

bonus points if it routes through Honolulu. Cheapest I can find online is ~$2100/2200 tax-in. (Seperate flights, through HNL)

I'd gladly pay an extra $200 to fly with Singapore Airlines, what an amazingly top notch air carrier they are; Cathay Pacific and New Zealand airlines are also quality.

Travelling that long distance, another option I used to recommend was taking a stopover with the carrier you end up choosing, so Singapore, Tokyo, Auckland, Seoul, etc.. Spend 3-4 days on the way down or returning and get to add in a quick visit to some really cool destinations. Stopovers are almost always free and highly recommended

I wanted to remind people that tickets can vary greatly in price depending on how long you stay, what season you depart from (low, shoulder, peak), and when you book (well in advance or close to departure.)

Actually, this is perfect, this is about the time that I was planning on heading over for, and the price I was hoping for.

no, not at all. I just thought the comment about travel cuts being the end all and be all of travel to Oz was a challenge!

Whoever you fly on, make sure your seat is comfy.

We flew from San Fran on United. Best use of our aeroplan miles, we truly appreciated 1st class.

Looks like a nice seat. I believe most cross-pacific airlines (maybe save AC) are fairly nice.

AC has flat bed seats in 1st class too.

Depends on the plane, AC's doing some work on the old 777 and 767 to put in back seat TVs and beds for first class... the cross pacific A340s that they usually use (well to fly to Asia anyways, not sure about Australia) don't have them yet, but apparently, they "might" in the future.
