Hey it takes 20 minutes for a burger at Harvey's, I could wait 20 minutes for some Ginger beef.

Mall Chinese food isn't bad.. and it sits under heat lamps. All i'm saying is it'd be mighty nice to have more options those days where you don't feel like cooking something up.

Nice attempted Kybosh BlackArcher.

Not a kybosh, just a reality. Besides, you told me to think about it. I did.

If chinese food in a drive thru took 20 minutes per order you wouldn't do it. I'm just saying that not enough people will be willing to sacrifice food quality in order to meet a food craving. I call it a food craving, because honestly it has to be that or else you could order ahead at a restaurant and get better food with the same amount of personal time spent towards the effort.

You know, I'm quite sure there are drive-throughs in China.
It must work.

There's a drive-thru not too far from here, and let me tell you - it's nice. It takes longer than your average drive-thru, but it's worth it.

Almost as good as Chinese food places that deliver

Yeah, I'll admit that I really don't know about the mainland yet. But at least you can get drive-through in Taiwan, and drive-up style is pretty common, so it can certainly be done.

It's been at least 8 or 9 years since I've been in mainland... so I don't know. Unfortunately, I've never been to Taiwan so I have no idea. But for sure there are no drive-thrus in HK that I know of

I don't recall ever seeing one drive through in China and I've spent almost year of my life there if I where to include working and vacation. Though there may have been one or two tucked away somewhere that I didn't chance upon. Majority of the population don't own personal vehicles, so the model doesn't work there.

Not to mention, what we consider fast food here isn't exactly cheap. For example, if I were to go to McDonald's it would cost around 30 or so RMB (about $4 with the current exchange - it was around $5 when I worked there 3 years ago). It doesn't sound like alot, but when you're making an average of 1000RMB per month as an average joe, 30 is alot for one meal. Local food in contrast, If I were to get a rice box, it would be anywhere from 8-12RMB, noodles can be anywhere from 3-8 RMB (yes, as little as 50 cents Canadian for a bowl of wonton noodle soup).

I don't know much about the exchange rate from CAD to RMB but I keep track on the exchange rate from CAD to HKD. Man has it gone up over the past several years. I still remember 1CAD is around 5HKD like it was yesterday... now 1CAD is worth almost 8HKD. It costs like 10HKD for a breakfast that will fill you up quite nicely. If you ever need anything technological wise, with the exchage rate between CAD and HKD now... u will get a pretty good deal.

If it's done in the fast food manner, it shouldn't take anywhere near twenty minutes to cook. Besides if people are waiting in Swiss Chalet drive thrus, they'll do the same for Chinese food.

I would be happy just to find a descent western style take out place near the Crescent Heights area. So far tried 3 and all are very low quality compared to what I got when I went to school in Edmonton.

On a related note, how about chinese food served out of a truck? I remember there were at least a few on the U of T campus a few years back... are they still there?

Actually, Toronto seems to serve a lot of food out of trucks... Chunky Fries at Bozo's anyone?

I've seen pizza places that have drive-thru's . . . well ok one, and it used to be a donut shop, but still you could go through and order a large pizza via drive-thru.

And is it really that different than Swiss Chalet? Don't they have drive-thru's out west in those too?

*note* that said I think that for something prepared fresh and takes 5+ minutes to make should be a go in and take-out order. Ever get stuck behind a guy for 15 at the BK/DQ drive-thru when you just want a burger and fries? What about the 10 minute Tim Horton's drive-thru when you just want a medium coffee black?

Looks like a "walk-thru"
