So, I am a new PVR owner. Now this may be a really dumb question, but I have to ask.

If someone were to turn the digital box/pvr off, and you had a program set to record in the middle of the night, would it turn itself back on to record the program, or do you have to leave it on all the time if you want to record?

Yes, it will turn itself on and off as needed to make the recording.

As everyone said, it will turn itself on.

If you always leave it on, it will always be recording the channel you leave it on.

Also, if its recording, and you turn on the TV and try to turn on the PVR, you will actually be trying to turn off the PVR (since its already on, and youve hit power) but it will give you a warning message and ask you to confirm to turn it off but dont hit too many buttons cuz you might actually turn it off while its recording... if that makes sense.

I guess question #2 is why it only shows 5 hours of program information, and then downloads the next 30 minutes every 30 minutes? Know what I mean? I can only see right now 6:30 - 11:30.

At 7, I'll be able to see until 12am.

There are only a few select channels that I can see into tomorrow.

This normal? Maybe I should go back to the manual.

I have the Bell 9200 HD PVR, and it shows me 7 full days of programming information. I've already set mine to record movies next weekend...not sure what's going on with yours.

I read something recently that said Bell was showing 7 days now, so if yours isn't I'd call them.

Yeah, well, its been connected for a few hours (its Shaw, btw) and I know that it needs a few hours to download sometimes... but this seems really long...

It takes a while for all of the information to update, but once it gets in, you should have 2 weeks worth of info. Right now, I have information up to 10:00pm on October 28.

haha... I've always wondered this myself... and have yet to test it to see if it works. I usually just leave mine on regardless.

Ive reset it, and will see if that works. Maybe it just got disrupted during the installation and getting it set up with the speakers, tv, DVD, etc...

I've had a PVR for awhile and I have been recording the same shows for close to a year now without having to reset anything, but one thing I learnt early on is that if you have a BELL PVR you have to turn it off by pressing the button on the PVR that way it can update the programming otherwise it screws up the shows you want to record. Anyways I have a question now is there any way to rip stuff you have recorded on your PVR???

as i understand it, when you disconnect the power or the cable, you can lose the channel menu information.

I believe that it will get the full 2 weeks ahead overnight.

I don't think you can rip it directly to your comp. Pretty sure they take steps to make sure you can't do that. But a friend of mine goes and records what she has PVR'd onto DVDs using a DVD recorder.

I am kind of dumb when it comes to this but would that work just like recording television to DVD??

Pretty much, just like a VCR, but with a disc. You can direct record to DVD and skip the PVR all together, but with the PVR, you can watch it first, then choose to immortalize it on DVD or not. I'm sure there has to be easier ways, but that's the only way I know.

Look into something called a Dazzle DVD Recorder. It's designed for transferring VHS to DVD, basically, but I have also heard that it works for video recorders. I will ask my friend tomorrow for sure, but I am almost positive it works for that.

These Motorola PVRS for Shaw are sooo hot. That can't be good for the harddrives. Do they die often?

Not that I'm aware of. I keep my seperate from the rest of my crap, DVD player, game stuff, and definitly under no circumstance stack anything on top of it. It should be fine.
