I think smaller systems, while more expensive, are going to be best. You can actually work with it on your lap. I find that bigger laptops just get way too hot.
My office mate's 15 inch MacBook is a toaster, quite a bit hotter than my work HP, and I can't work with that on my lap.

hahaha wasn't there an article saying that hot laptops were making men infertile.
If you buy a dell laptop you can still get it with Win XP. otherwise just format the harddrive and start from scratch. Prob a good idea with all that pre loaded crap they install with your system.

Vista isn't that bad. But I would recommend having 2GB of ram if you are getting Vista. It is pretty graphics heavy.

Yeah, the slimmer 13" laptop you'll enjoy a lot more. And considering how much used laptop stores charge for their junk, you're better off getting a new one. Warranty matters more with laptops as well.

I'd vote for a Macbook, they're more money but wow are they nice machines.

Agree with the Mac. For what you propose to do, they'll work great and they're easy to use. How easy? When our MacBook came this summer, my wife had it connected to our wireless network (encrypted, with no ssid broadcast so it required some manual configuration) in about 15 minutes without my intervention.

Staples is dealing with a huge lawsuit right now...Apparently they've been putting refurbished parts in new laptops. I heard it from someone at work and couldn't find any links...but he worked in IT. Just a heads up.

Microsoft is offering a free downgrade to Vista, I beleive the link was somewhere on this forum. I get whatever free software I need from MSDN AA so I didnt pay that much attention.
On that note, for the best prices, sign up for the Dell email and they will send you out better deals that are usually on the website, however be careful since they cut you a deal normally with a bundle (like increased RAM or something) that if you dont actully need is a waste.

Why would it take more than 15 minutes to connect to wireless with a pc?

I purchased a Dell Vostro 1400 recently and I recommend it. Perfect size and you can upgrade the resolution to WXGA+, which was a big factor in my decision. I find screens with WXGA resolution too small.
The battery life is great since it can go for well over 5 hours with Wifi on.

I would stick with atleast a decent brand name. It doesnt sound like you need much, so really anything would work. Since you won't be using it for gaming, I would stick to less than $1000. I mean you could go out and buy a super nice $3000 machine that'll last you 3 years or so, or you could buy 3 brand new computers within that 3 year span for the same cost (the 3rd computer will be 10x better than the original $3000 computer today).
One thing I would mention since this seems like it is your first time purchasing a laptop, get a small one! You're probably used to big 19"+ monitors, but I would go with 15" or less on any laptop, anything bigger, and it is basically non-portable.

Bought mine last May. It's a Pentium M 1.5ghz with 1gig ram and a DVD-Rom/CD-RW combo drive. At the time, they were selling used for $650 and in good condition. The laptop is strangely durable too considering the battering I've put it through (daily use in a backpack with text books).
But I checked their online catelogue... they don't seem to list their used stuff and the stuff they do advertise is way overpriced...

Most vendors now sell laptops with downgrade DVD's if they don't provide them with WinXP already installed.
If you buy through Dell, you can order it with WinXP pre-installed. I hear a number of other vendors are going the same route (Lenovo comes to mind).

Are you SAIT staff? if you are we have a comp purchase plan. As long as the comp is over $1000 they can take it off your cheque $100/month until it's paid off, interest free.
Plus we can buy stuff from Mem Express on that plan. hmmm not the best thing since i got the quad core from it when i didn't really need it. hehe

How much RAM in that one? That's going to be the biggest point.
Me, I prefer Intel processors, but that is partially a stigma that I have about AMD.
