Default 6 Die From Brain-Eating Amoeba in Lakes

http://apnews.myway.com/article/20070928/D8RUL1D00.html

Quote:
PHOENIX (AP) - It sounds like science fiction but it's true: A killer amoeba living in lakes enters the body through the nose and attacks the brain where it feeds until you die.

Even though encounters with the microscopic bug are extraordinarily rare, it's killed six boys and young men this year. The spike in cases has health officials concerned, and they are predicting more cases in the future.
"This is definitely something we need to track," said Michael Beach, a specialist in recreational waterborne illnesses for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"This is a heat-loving amoeba. As water temperatures go up, it does better," Beach said. "In future decades, as temperatures rise, we'd expect to see more cases."

Well the good news is I have a better chance at winning the lottery than being killed by this amoeba.

You couldn't pay the amoeba enough money to stop feeding on your brain =)

Man, one of the things I liked about North America was that we didn't have these weird water-born amoebas, parasites and diseases to deal with, or so I thought.

Yeah, this is nothing new. There are usually a few deaths a year attributed to it. But there is a spike...hence the concern. The 3 I've heard about were in Central Florida and in the same body of water.

It's also extremely treatable if you catch it early enough...but who goes looking for amoebas when you have flu like symptoms?

Has anyone tried talking to these amoeba? Maybe if we tried communicating with them, they wouldn't eat peoples brains. Maybe we could interest them in some healthy tofu or a spinach salad!

The cure for this is simple. Let it clamp to Tie Domi's brain. It will starve.
