Or, because he has his best year ever, he re-signs with Daryl and the Flames. Yes he will be more expensive than if he sucked, but that is a good thing, no?

No guarantees that he will sign here, of course. But also not guaranteed that he would sign elsewhere.

So will the defence pairings look something like this (assuming none of the current players are traded as part of a potential eichel trade)?

Hanifin-Tanev
Zadorov-Andersson
Valimaki-Stone(assuming he signs)

Extra: Mackey/Kylington/Kinnvall

Or alternatively:

Hanifin-Tanev
Valimaki-Andersson
Zadorov-Stone

Extra: Mackey/Kylington/Kinnvall

Wouldn't be the first guy who signs a deal at a decent price because he loves his fit.

I think they kept it at one year to give them flexibility. Go to capfriendly, look at 2022-23, and punch in likely numbers for Tkachuk and Gaudreau. It’s ugly.

I predict he will be the most hated player by fans on the team this year
Where is all the hate coming from? What's the big knock on the guy?

I've seen a few posters mention character issues. Not sure where the source is coming from?...

Valimaki Anderson would be a mistake IMO. Your first setup is probably what will happen.

Zadorov will not be in the bottom pairing.

Given how well Hanifin and Andersson have played together in the past, I'd prefer:

Hanifin-Andersson
Zadorov-Tanev
Valimaki-Kylington

Extra: Mackey/Kinvall/Stone?/Welinski

Hanifin - Andersson
Valimaki - Tanev
Mackey - Zadorov
Kylington

We saw the strides Hughes and Hanifin made next to Tanev... why not allow Valimaki to do the same. Let's give our kids the opportunity to develop into high end players. Mackey deserves a full time spot too.

Well, then you either have Tanev playing semi-sheltered minutes or Valimaki playing shutdown minutes. Not ideal.

I don't disagree but game management is a thing. Valimaki/Hanifin can flip flop depending on the situation/score in the game. Having Hanifin/Tanev play consistent minutes together makes this d-core unnecessarily top heavy in my opinion. We are better off rolling three relatively strong pairings under Darryl. Defense by committee.

I suspect Sutter doesn't like changing pairings very much. Neither do Dmen, usually, if they have a partner they are used to (like Brodie).

He’s simply not particularly good.

I do expect Sutter to get the most out of him though.

He would best be served playing the 5-6 role, not on the 2nd pairing.

The odds that we’ll regret a one year deal on this player are slim at best.

That’s fair. My assumptions are probably way off. I would have thought they would have come to an agreement sooner if it was a one year that was the plan all along, as opposed to this close to the arb case. I like what he brings to our defense though. Would be good to have someone with a physical presence.

I think you have to assume he'll miss at least 10 games this year
Why? Does he have a nagging recurring injury? A bunch of unrelated injuries could just be bad luck. You’d be just as likely to be right guaranteeing that a player would never be injured because he didn’t have a history of injuries.

Would've liked to have seen a two year deal simply for continuity's sake, but can see why it's only one.

We need a defensive d-man with grit. We got it here. If he can be half of what Reggie was then I will be happy.

I think we will be pleased with his game. Especially in playoffs.

Only downside is we likely lose him for nothing ufa as we are in the mix for playoffs so can’t trade him, but can’t afford him on the open market. .

Honestly, I was expecting something like 4 years... I think this is probably a better outcome than that, although 2years would have made it more likely to recoup what they spent to get him. But it still seems like a low-risk acquisition all around.

I doubt that Zardrov had much interest in a two year deal.

It was either 1 year or 4+ years.
