The league has disallowed contracts that broke the “spirit” of the CBA. And there’s been no previous examples of this because owners know it’s off side.

This would be such a massive mistake.
Zadorov is a great story, he's played well and formed a third pairing match with Gudbranson.
But he's older
He's sheltered
He was beat out to be the top four left defenseman.
If he had to take on Hanifin's matchups and workload for one period it would be obvious that you wouldn't make that swap.

I'll be shocked if Zadorov gets re-signed here.
If a bottom pair dman is re-signed, my money is on Gudbranson before Zadorov.
Pretty high chance neither is retained though IMO.

Zadorov is nice to have around and I can't wait to see him in the playoffs, but his price tag is not going down... See if you can sign Gudbranson for a reasonable price and it's time we get a look at Mackey and Valimaki.

The big question is how much AAV will Z give up in exchange flor a long term deal.
I guess another question is - why does he get traded so often? Does he decline in play after a while everywhere he goes?

I think it's because all teams are looking for a big, mobile dman. But he is overpaid for his role.
So, just as he is in Calgary, he's a good but overpaid stop gap and when teams have another option, including from within, he is moved on.

From his interview he sure seems to be looking to settle into a spot. OTOH, a lot of the Russian players are pretty mercenary. And US dollars are going to be worth a ton back home as well.

I personally think there is zero chance that Zadorov is in Calgary next year. I could see the team bringing Gudbranson back on say a two year deal for similar money to what they paid him this year. But they need to move some of Zadorov's AAV to Kylington, and go find another Gudbransson type who the league has soured on who needs a good situation for a one year prove you can still play deal.

Teams and pundits have been praising the Flames being hard to play against and how tough they are. Is that because of Hanifin?
Not only is Zad big and hits, he will fight and stand up for teammates. And he isn't that old. Give him 5-6 years and a lower AAV.

All players are paid in US dollars.
Also, if you converted your USD to CAD, you could still buy they same amount of Rubles.

I know. I just mean he’s going to be looking for a lot of money right away because that’s worth a lot back home right now.

I don’t think Zadorov or Gubanson will re-sign. Especially Zadorov.
I have reason to believe that most of their effectiveness is due to Suuter utilizing them optimally. The guys that replace them could be comparable as lot as Sutter continues to make the pairing play to their strengths.
I think it’s very likely that Zadorov and Gubanson won’t be as good on their next teams as they were in Calgary. I don’t think these guys should be overpaid at the expense of the Gaudreau, Mangiapane, Tkachuk and Kylington contracts.

But that's a different conversation.
I'm not against Zadorov, I think he's been great this year.
But you don't sign him and lose your first pairing unsheltered left defenseman in exchange.

I expect Zadorov will find someone to sign him for three or maybe four years. But not as a $3.75 mil second pairing guy. He’s a second/third pairing tweener, and will be paid as such - closer to $2.5 mil than $3.75 mil. And that’s still more than the Flames will be able to afford for a guy on their third pairing.

I wonder if Gudbranson might be willing to take a fairly low AAV to get some term and maybe trade protection. Bouncing between 6 teams over the last 4 seasons can't have been a lot of fun, and perhaps he appreciates a good situation when he sees it.
While he hasn't made huge money, he's also had some decent deals and managed to earn $26M in the 8 years since his ELC.
This is a little crazy...but what if we offered him something like 8x1.5M? In 5 years the buried threshold will probably be 1.25M or higher, so you're risking a few years of ~$250k buried penalty.
It's hard to say what his market will be in UFA this year...maybe he can get a 3x3? Which means he'd need to earn at least another $3M after age 33 to beat out that 8 year deal - which would also be better for him from a tax and security perspective.
Save ~1.5M on the cap for 3-4 years, and then possibly burn $250k for 4-5 years...

no need for 8 years, 4 X $1.5 would do the same thing

I really like Zadorov, but I think for the money he's going to command, not re-signing him opens up both cap and a space for one of the younger guys. Personally, I'd like for the Flames to re-sign Gudbranson and pair him with one of our younger D-men. I'd love to see him paired with Connor Mackey.

You don’t think he could snag a 3x2 or 2x3?

Yes I do, and maybe more.
I was simply responding to the 8 year comment, suggesting 8 wouldn't be necessary (or wise, for that matter)

I think you give him 3 x 1.75. That's good value and 5.25 over 3 years leaves meat on the bone for Gudbranson.
