Because apparently we can flip him at the deadline despite a tracker record of never doing that even when they should.
Spend assets to fight for the 8th seed. That's this organization's plan.

It's entirely possible the guy just wants to go to UFA. It's been reported that some players weren't happy with the restrictions in Canada last season, and there are other reasons a player's first choice isn't a Canadian city.
Zadorov is the type of player who may only get one reasonably big contract, depending on the length of his next one. Maybe he just wants to cash in while he can.

Edler is 9 years older than Zadorov. Last season, they put up the same number of points. Edler had significantly more penalty minutes, although part of that was one game misconduct for Edler. Excluding that, they both had 2 majors and Edler had 19 minor penalties to Zadorov's 13.
Edler signed a one-year $3.5 million contract with the Kings at the start of free agency.
At this stage in their careers, I suspect the Flames will get better value from this contract than the Kings will from the Edler contract.

I think it's likely that he just wants to see if he will like it. I wouldn't just to conclusions that he doesn't.

Who cares. We don't know what his intentions are, and it's not like we gave up a lot to acquire him. If I can watch one game where flames defenders aren't struggling in vain to clear guys out from in front of our own net, it'll be worth it.

In the previous two seasons he signed a 1 year deal with Colorado, followed by a 1 year deal with Chicago.
I don't think I'd necessarily look at this contract as an indicator that he doesn't want to be with this club.

Or maybe the Flames wanted to keep the dollar figure down? Or maybe the Flames recognize how many young D they have already and didn't want to make a long term commitment? Or maybe both sides realized a 1 year deal was a better scenario then getting a 1 year deal handed out by the arbitrator.
This deal gives the Flames flexibility and doesn't preclude keeping him long term as a fit. Even if it ends up as a one year deal why does anyone care? Come the deadline, if we are the thick of it nobody is batting an eye on a third for a Zadarov rental, and if we aren't then we at least get our third back.
Were you hoping we got locked into a 4.5 x 4 contract we might regret, and that might cost us keeping Valamki or Andersson long term?

Yeah it seems that he's a guy wanting to keep options open, or, has a spot in mind and is waiting for that chance to go there each year.
You do have to think the Flames wanted more of a term when trading for him, but as mentioned, a 1 year deal.means he can't really coast, which in turn means he's not going to go soft on the physical side, which is a welcome change from the last near decade of not having a true physical presence back there, save Engellend.

I was hoping for multiple years, but I’m not deeply saddened. If he likes it here he will re-sign. If he doesn’t, then we aren’t locked up with him. Could always go for Gio again.

Not to mention a completely new city, country, team. Can’t blame the guy if he did not want to commit to a long term deal until he at least gets an idea of if he wants to be here.

Yes, Colorado traded him for a plug like Saad because they got sick of him . As for Chicago, they had one year of control of the asset. I don’t think Chicago sees itself as a contender this year, hence the trade.

Rittich, hudler, glencross, that tall goalie that did fist pumps... Flames trade players at the deadline plenty. Biggest miss was brodie and he was replaced at no assets lost (ufa)

I think Chicago sees themselves as a possible playoff team.
They did not think highly of Zadorov, even leaving him exposed in the expansion draft.

If you’re willing to trade a player for a 3rd, you’re certainly happy if that player is taken in the expansion draft instead of somebody more valuable to you

I don't know, using the same logic the Flames didn't think highly of Gio. I get what you're saying though. Seattle didn't pick him so there can be an argument there. As for protecting Connor Murphy, Caleb Jones, and Riley Stillman I think team control played a big role in the selections. Both Jones and Stillman while not world beaters are younger. Murphy wears an A for them and they value him more. So yes they didn't value a year of Zadorov at around $3.5-4M(or they could've been afraid of arbitration), but that doesn't mean they don't think highly of Zadorov himself.

Uh, you do realize he was acquired with a pick the Flames received for trading a UFA this past deadline
