Tanev did play a chunk of last season with broken ribs IIRC

I think 7 consecutive years of not playing more than 70 games indicates it’s not bad luck. His style of play leads to a lot of injuries, constantly blocking shots at all cost takes its toll, I’m not saying it as an insult, you just have to have realistic expectations. He plays a tough game, tough games leads to injuries. If he makes it to 82 that’s great, I just think it’s unlikely because it’s never happened and he averages below 60

All the stuff that Sutter loves. I remember hearing a few interviews from his former players that said Darryl had a way to motivate you even IF you were hurt he still had demands on you reasonable or not.
Tanev was awesome last year and I cannot remember the last time we acquired a player that stepped in and performed that well ......I actually wouldn't mind him being captain.

He was available for basically nothing. Seattle passed on him, the Blues could have let them know they would give up a draft pick for him.

Dude was an absolute stud before the injury, and still quietly solid afterward.
Pretty impressive all things considered.

What are people's pairings for next season? Would you keep Hanifin and Tanev together as they were all-worldly before Noah went down, or split them up to keep the top two pairings solid in their own end?

I probably go...
Hanifin - Tanev
Hopefully let Hanifin find more offense paired with a defensive stalwart
Zadorov - Andersson
Same thing here, really
Valimaki - XXXXX
Best out of Mackey, Kylington, Kinvall, or anyone else they happen to bring in.

Stone with Valimaki and Kinvall rotating as the #6 is my ideal third pairing.
I think Kinvall is that darkhorse prospect that is seasoned and quietly already on the cusp.

I think I’d like to see:
Hanifin - Andersson
Valimaki - Tanev
Kylington - Zadarov
I don’t think Zadarov is a top-four defenceman on a playoff team, and placing Valimaki with Tanev is the best spot for him and his development. It’s asking a lot of Hanifin, Andersson, and Valimaki but that’s just the situation this team is in.

Are there comparable defenseman with zero offence that make 4 mill a year? If we are structuring our team around low event hockey does a player with a reputation for taking too many penalties match that structure?

I like what Zadorov brings, but I am not sure he is the kind of player you want to invest in long term. See if it's a fit, then offer him an extension. If not, there are always players like him available.

From a pure asset management perspective was hoping for at least 2 years even if the salary was high. Just feels like they flushed the 3rd tbh. Team is not a cup contender this year so why give up picks for a stopgap.

There are several I can think of, but I don't want to argue about who is a better comparable and who brings more offense. I went off points, and not analytics so this list is up for debate:
Jamie Oleksiak @ 4.6M
Olli Maata @ 4.083M
Adam Larsson @ 4M
Joel Edmundson @ 3.5M
David Savard @ 3.5M
Dylan DeMelo @ 3M
Ian Cole(?) @ 2.9M was 4.25M
last season Niklas Hjalmarsson @ 5M

This is a good deal. He fills a need, and a try before you buy approach makes sense. It also keeps the cap low giving them more flexibility to make improvements in other areas.
If he is a great fit, we will extend him. If not, the damage is limited.
Did fans really expect we were going into the season with Tanev, Andersson, Hanafin, Valamki, Kylington, Mackay?

So basically, he doesn't want to be a Flame. Hopefully he plays hard for his big pay day next off season.
