There was an NHL Awards official after party I believe, which I'm sure spilled out on Broadway.

I doubt that Detroit makes a move for two large contracts. I expect of they are chasing Debrincat over Lindholm, they really want the younger player to sign to the inevitable 8 year deal.

They called a hungover Steinberg on the morning show this morning.
Guess the official after party was at Tequila Cowboy (which is on broadway), and then he wasn't sure what happened after that.

2023/2024 Trade Rumors and Speculation thread

This to me is a real possibility that could make tomorrow a bit of a let down. Other GMs know that if these players are not going to sign, Conroy will be forced to trade them as he has made it clear that they will not have a repeat of Gaudreau where they go into the year with so so many unsigned pending UFAs.
That makes think the pressure will be more on Conroy to take whatever he can get if he doesn’t get anything done at the draft. If the GMs interested in these players stand firm and aren’t willing to trade picks in this draft, Conroy will have to settle for picks in the 2024 draft instead. Which would be kind of disappointing considering how strong this draft is.
I really hope these trades are for first round picks in this draft. I know it’s probably the draft fever we get every year at this time but I would not even place a high importance on getting already drafted prospects in return for these players. Teams are so reluctant to trade those players. Quality picks in this draft are the higher priority for me.
If the flames traded Backlund, Hanifin, Toffoli and Lindholm in the next 24 hours and it meant they got to pick 5 times in the first round with 3 of those picks in the top 13 to 20, I think that’s a really solid return considering the position Conroy is being put in.
I would hope us fans would be pretty excited for that kind of draft. Those players may not work out but that’s the risk of draft picks. Prospects from other teams could also turn into a flop even if they are a year or two into their development.
Obviously it takes two teams to make a trade and if the market is simply just not there at the draft… it is what it is. Hoping for a big couple days though for this team.

Sure, if there were only one interested team for each player. But that is not the case. Several interested parties for each of them, and our players are among the best available, so it is the other teams that are more at risk of missing out.

Although I can see them taking some cap back to accomodate a deal.
And I don't think that the Flames are in the drivers seat here, Lindholm and Hanifin are. If they aren't willing to negotiate a new contract with the acquiring team, the price goes down. And for some teams, they may simply not be interested in rentals. And it looks like lots of players who are UFA's in a years time are negotiating based on a huge increase next year in the cap, and adding that into their request.
|
Why wouldn’t the Flames retain? Clearly it would be to their benefit, curious to know why you don’t believe they will? Bear in mind this team has had dead money on their cap before through buyouts. What’s the difference? Factor in they get an enhanced return for carrying the dead cap, I don’t see where your line of thinking is coming from. Seems to me you’re just painting this with pessimism.
Lindholm really doesn’t have much leverage. He had no trade protection, surely there is a team out there (several probably) that he would be happy to talk extension with and give the Flames good return. Hanifin has a 10 team NTC, I believe, so it’s entirely reasonable to think there will be several teams interested. Nor do I necessarily think ‘lots’ of UFA’s will wait until next year. If a team, the Flames or otherwise, are offering Lindholm a deal worth $64-68M today he would really have to want to bet on himself that next years performance and health go very well. A lot can happen and a lot is not necessarily in the players hands. John Kingberg being exhibit A.
Great to think a guy might have the balls to say no to $64-68M when you don’t have any skin in the game.

Yup, the NHL is a zero sum game and as long as Conroy is working the phones then it should be fine. I do think most of the GMs will be pushing for the picks to be in 24 though.
I know in hindsight that that Tkachuk trade turned sour but there was no one predicting he'd return Huberdeau, Weegar, and a 1st and he realistically only had three teams that could fit him in.

I really hope this is the case. It does help that it seams PLD is either going to LA or to Montreal. That dilutes the market for other teams looking for quality centres like Lindholm or Backlund.

Vilardi seems like the type of player that could absolutely take off, once he gets the @#$# away from LA. I guess PLD is a center? If that's setting the market for centers it could mean that the Flames are getting a haul for Lindholm and/or Backlund.

Jets always seem to do well when trading players that want out. That said I don't see this as a home run or anything as Kupari isn't a top prospect in their organization.
