Yeah, you can argue the Toffoli trade was an attempt to stay competitive but there is zero argument that can be made about the Zadorov trade.

Somebody mentioned it above...trade for Kakko and Lundell, sign Puljujarvi and create a young Finnish line.

Why do people like Lundell that much? Do you think he will figure things out defensively? He's the last guy I'd like the Flames to take a gamble on.

I definitely think Lindholm and his agent can throw the idea of that contract into the trash heap. He is looking at the Kadri deal at best.

Byram is a piece we desperately need and he will be stuck behind Makar and Toews if he remains in Colorado.
If he can stay healthy he has quite the ceiling. Would instantly become our best PP quarterback.
Just can we convince Colorado to do it?

That's a big if on the health question. As I said before I would rather acquire Ritchie than Byram, maybe not the upside at his position but he isn't made of glass either.

Works out way better for the Flames, but Lindholm probably lost himself over 15 million dollars on the overall value of his next contract.

I think he will beat the Kadri deal, especially if he is willing to go anywhere. Obviously 9M and 8 years is laughable at this point.

He's not bad defensively at all...it's more if he ever shows the offensive potential he showed as a rookie with 40 points again.
If he figures it out though he's like a tailor made replacement for Lindholm and would be very similar to like acquiring Lindholm when the Flames did from Carolina.
Lundell and Byram both still have the potential to be top line or top pairing types of talent, and are the types of talent you want to buy low on and bet on in trades like these.

I'm a big fan of Byram so I might not be the most objective on it.
I think he has the talent you gamble on.

How about these potential trades:
To Colorado: Lindholm (50% retained)
To Calgary: 2024 1st round pick + Calum Ritchie + Johansen (cap dump)
To Dallas: Hanifin (50% retained)
To Calgary: 2024 1st round pick + 2nd round pick + Lian Bischel
To New Jersey: Markstrom
To Calgary: 2024 1st round pick (top 10 protected) + 2024 3rd round pick + Vanacek
To Vancouver: Tanev (50% retained)
To Calgary: 2024 1st round pick

I don’t really like the Markstrom deal but all others are good for Calgary in my opinion.

I look at the quality of the pick from New Jersey as higher than any pick in any of the other trades. If they pick where they are set to pick right now, it’s a 12th overall pick. That’s a very good pick to get for any goalie in any circumstance. Can’t remember the last time a goalie went for something like that.

Adding a top goalie should get NJ out of that spot. I shook my head when fans were saying we should dump Markstrom on the Oilers so we get a top 5 pick and all it took was some better goaltending and team play and Edmonton’s pick looks destined for the 20’s.
I might regret saying this due to the volatility of the position but I think Markstrom is worth keeping around to mentor Wolf and if the team wants to get back to contention soon having a top tandem makes sense.
If they are chasing high picks the next couple years (very acceptable approach) then I would think moving Markstrom should be a priority.

Two of their top three defencemen are injured (probably for the season), and their #1C is injured again too. This season is a write-off for NJ.

I don't think it's to wiggle into playoffs at all costs.
I think its a combo of:
1. Not lose assets for free
1.1 sign them if possible
1.2 trade then if not
2. Stay in the mix
3. Get younger
I have derived these from interviews from management and insiders like friedman, Maloney, bean, Conroy and francis.
Maybe I'm wrong on this please let me know.
I get worried that they will put too much emphasis on 1.1 and 2, because it comes up alot in the interviews and historically that is what they've done.

Absolutely. This kid has the motor to play 25 mins a night as up and down the ice dman. Would probably instantly become our best player. Overshadowed but was instrumental in Colorados Championship. Still can’t believe he’d be available though.
I know he hates the Oilers too. Big plus lol.

I do not see them moving their 1st at all for a 34 year old goalie who has been fairly hot and cold over the past several seasons if that is the case

I would be good with the Lindholm and Tanev deals. Take out the 2nd round pick and Bischel and change them to Bourque for the Dallas deal. The Markstrom deal is not even close, there needs to another very significant asset coming back like a Holtz and change the 3rd to a 2nd.

Would be huge wins across the board!
