Maloney is used to turmoil and tough market conditions. Its his brand basically. He's a good mentor for Conroy to have, and probably an equally good conduit to ownership.

There’s zero indication he’s “meddling” or that it would be a bad thing if he were.

Zero indication? He was on air live talking about how they would rather keep the UFAs and resign them than trade anyone last week.
That's braindead. Anyone saying that should be out in the cold. If you don't think this opinion is being generated by Maloney please tell us why.

He ran a loser club into being more of a loser for a decade and then came here. The club he ran was so bad that the town it is in can't even be partially assed to support it.
I don't understand any of this respect for Don Maloney. He has done and won nothing ever.

^ He ran a club owned by the NHL at the time under a pretty tight, almost non existent cap.

So he's an NHL errand boy? The club was terrible. I fail to see how getting an NHL errand boy who's famous for operating bad performers on shoestring budgets helps our club, who is essentially the redheaded step child of NHL leadership and nearly always spends to the cap (but still generally ices a loser it seems.)

The Coyotes had more playoff success under Maloney than any Flames team has since 2005.
When you consider the cap restraints and ownership problems, it's kind of impressive. Though I think Tippet probably deserves more credit than does Maloney.

Under Maloney's watch, the Coyotes made it to the Conference Final for the only time in the franchise's 40+ year history.

Explain why that indicates that he’s meddling.

It would also be braindead to come out and say they are 100% trading those guys no matter what. Either way you want some leverage. I don't know why people are freaking out over things that are being said in the media, unless they have no idea what they are doing, I doubt they are saying exactly what they are planning to do.

100% right!
(if you eat up every sound byte that comes your way and never question whether an executive needs to balance things internally with ah hockey team that needs to still employ said players every two nights until they're moved)

With Maloney it wouldn't really be meddling...he's the President of Hockey Operations...he'd be expected to have some input into the teams hockey decisions.
Was Brian Burke "meddling" when he hired Treliving as GM and was involved in the hockey decisions?

I really hope that Monahan rumour is not true. Have always loved that player and would hate to see him go to the oilers. I’m assuming the oiler’s first round pick + any of their prospects are in play this year. I wonder who they will get for them. They need everything the flames have (tanev and Lindholm) but won’t get them so who do they target? Monahan does make sense cap wise and as a position of need and they will likely be willing to overpay more than anyone else because they are more desperate to win in their 2 years of remaining window.

Quick question ... is there any sort of trade freeze over the all-star break?

Monahan makes no sense for the Oilers IMO.
Most of his value is on the PP offensively right now...he's not cracking their top unit.
He's not strong defensively at 5v5 which is what they need behind 97 and 29.
I would be sad to see it but I hope they do spend a 1st on him because he's in no way a guy you want playing in a third line centre role on that team.

Wonder if this means it's acceptable for the team to shop him. Get a good trade in place, then approach Markstrom. Surely, Markstrom has given the team hints as to what kind of teams he would accept a trade to. Example, does he want to be in a big city, likely a contender, ideal weather, etc...
