I find it really hard to judge player's competitive nature, as it were, because there are so many other factors involved. Maybe he wants to win but doesn't want to uproot his family. Maybe he wants to win but there are other things more important at this stage. That doesn't mean he's comfortable and is okay with losing, but a career is short, and your family life much longer - and with a family, there is more than 1 person to consider.

All I’m saying is I don’t see a conversation around the NMC fracturing any relationships or being uncomfortable. Markstrom is a leader on the team and is well respected. If they trade him, it’ll be because he was interested in it.

Anybody think the flames will send the key ufas home wrapped in bubble wrap if they haven’t been traded in the next 2 weeks? I personally don’t think they would do it. if it was me I would .

We are only 5 points out of that precious 8th play-off spot, if anything this team will up their minutes trying to get those two home play-off dates.

I still see the team as buyers this year. Remember, just get in and anything can happen!

The idea that asking a player about his NTC could strain the relationship is still crazy to me. Like, when a GM says to a player's camp "hey, we value you a lot, but we are looking at a bit of a retool and there are teams interested in you, so if there's teams out there that you would possibly waive for, please let us know", I don't understand how that could possibly damage the relationship? These are professionals, not 12-year-olds.

Meh.
"We aren't contending this year, and likely not next year either. Such and such a team has shown interest in you. They could win the cup this year or next and see you as the missing piece. Would you be interested?"
How does that ruin anything?

No one said asking would hurt. I think pressuring would though. Especially if they knew the NMC was a big deal to the player.

No one thinks that.
They aren't likely being traded until closer to March 8, they aren't sitting out close to a month.
They might sit out one game if it looks like they are being traded that day or the next.

relevant Kent Wilson article. I know some will cringe at the sight of his name but I like this read
You get what you manage toward
https://bigbodypresence.substack.com...-manage-toward
Quote:
Calgary’s problem isn’t that they don’t want the cup enough, but that they want it in a way that limits their operational horizon to the next week, the next game, the next month, the next off-season.
The org’s North Star shouldn’t simply be “win the cup” - that can lead to the endless bubble team the fanbase has been subjected to for so long. Instead, it should be “build the best team in the league over a five-season period.” That goal increases the chance of winning a cup, of course, while also both broadening and clarifying the scope of work required.
If you want to craft the best team in hockey over half a decade, you need not one star, not two, but many. You’ll need stellar drafting, a robust prospect pipeline, and ruthlessly efficient cap management. And if you aren’t close to this ideal currently then what does it take to get there?

I doubt they send anyone home to sit and wait for a deal, but at the same time they should not be risking potential injury to players either. I would play certain players sparingly or get them traded early. A lot of activity last season happened two weeks before the deadline. The Horvat deal was the one that kicked things off and it took place January 30th last season. It would really suck to lose assets because we played a guy we knew was going to be traded only to watch him go down with injury in what amounts to a meaningless game.

Trying to salvage this season at this point would be the most flames thing to do, so I'm expecting that to happen.
If Craig truly thinks he can save this, then we're back to what's plagued this franchise for over 2 decades. This team has no stars, it has no robust stockpile in the draft cupboards.
It's got a great cast of supporting players, a bunch of disgruntled UFA's and and goalie who's likely value is the highest it'll be in the next few years with a market that's looking to be very advantageous for teams trading "good" goalies.
This team needs to do it properly, it needs to remove itself from the "just get in and anything can happen" mentality.
At no point this season has the team shown that it can go toe to toe with any team in 7 game series.
Please don't mess this up.

At this point, it’s likely that Conroy is waiting for the auction at the TDL
That’s his best bet.

I am confident Conroy will do the right thing. I would be more concerned if there was already lots of contenders moving assets and we were not involved. No one has done anything yet. Cap is tight

I’d start the car on a few of those. I’d wager the return will be less, but hope I’m wrong.
