I feel like if you want to go East Asian, Southeast Asian and Mexican, LA is going to be a pretty good time.

Exactly. Rich people like to shop for luxurious things. Chicago has the Magnificent Mile. Calgary has a Nordstrom’s.

Sushi yes. Korean sure I guess but it's just as good here sans soondubu. Chinese nope. Thai nope. Viet nope. East Indian nope.
Mexican is better there but it's pretty damned good here now.
There's no real southern style food here.

LA Korean is its own thing - it's street food. Kind of Korean-Mexican. It's great.

I love the Blues Can. But there's a difference between places I go where I know the guys playing because they are accountants or bankers by day and going to a place where people I've only read about play. BUT that I can talk to over beers after the show. I was in Buddy Guys with people from my firm and got talking to the band afterwards about music and then looked up and the place was shutting down. And all my colleagues were long gone. So much fun.

Hell, Dundas Street in Toronto alone has as many quality restaurants, if not more, than in all of Calgary.

It isn't too far, in the opinion of many.
Saw a list in a magazine (Toronto based, including the article in question) that listed 8 Calgary restaurants, in their list of top 20 in Canada. Including #1. IIRC, Toronto had 9 or 10, and Van had 2 or 3.
Saw another article recently, on the same topic, describing Calgary restaurants as the best in Canada, and the best kept secret in Canada. Unfortunately, can't remember where I saw that.
But it's okay to brag about things in your city that are good. You don't have to start from the position of 'small town, therefore not as good as bigger cities', every time.

I'm Korean. Don't tell me about Korean food. Especially in LA. My parents live there.

I might tell you something about it, like how my favorite Korean-LA chef is Roy Choi.

Can't get Roy Choi in town. Or Micheal Mina or Todd English or Thomas Keller or Joel Robuchon. That's the point.

Food aside, you can't just take personal experience and opinion as representative of opinion of the general public as a whole.
For example, I love Calgary and would never want to live in a big metropolis like Chicago or LA, but the majority of my friends and family would. Hockey players are the same. I'm sure there are guys that love it here and wouldn't want to be anywhere else. Lanny has made Calgary his home. Backs looks like he's going to be here forever. But the vast majority of NHLers would rather play elsewhere. To argue otherwise by pointing personal experience is foolish. Even using pseudo-stats like best rated restaurants in Canada is a bit of a red herring. What really matters at the end of the day is public opinion on a large scale. What do all NHLers think as a whole? The answer is obvious. We're always pretty high up on no-trade lists.
Also this speaks for itself, but if Calgary is as attractive to live in as Chicago, we'd have as big of a population as them from people wanting to live here. Calgary is growing fast - a combination if affordability, employment opportunity, nature, diversity - has made it more and more attractive. But we are not there yet when compared to the big metropolises. Not close.

Greater LA has an "Asian" population of 2.6M people which is about double Calgary's total population. Their hispanic population is roughly 8.6M people.
Based on demographics alone, there is no reasonable argument that anyone can make to say that Calgary's Asian/Mexican food is anywhere near the realm of LA.

I'm not a foody or into the restaurant scene, but it nice to hear that Calgary stands up with some of the better known cities. There was a Korean-Mexican food truck recently at the park close to where I live. I didn't realize that combo was actually a thing, I thought it was like a one off or something.
Probably one of the oddest combos I have scene is Hungarian-Thai. In Kensington Market, in Toronto, there is a Hungarian-Thai restaurant. I never had a chance to try it though.

Agreed. Although I will say that we are giving the city itself a bit too much credit in thread. I know times are a bit different but if we rewind a few years and look at Detroit, Denver, and Pittsburg. Pretty comparable cities to Calgary. During their dynasty years you had star players take discounts to go to those teams.
I still believe that if we build a winning team and environment, players will want to come here regardless of what kind of city Calgary is.

Its CP.
If it was a Food and Entertainment Forum everyone would be arguing about their favorite muscle car.
