Clearly none of the players on the team will ever win anything, because the team hasn't accomplished anything in the last decade. But if you try to get rid of them all, you haven't got a team.

So let's just fold the franchise.

While we're at it, fold the other 16 franchises that haven't accomplished anything in the last decade.

Kings and Rangers, you're on the clock. If you don't at least make the SCF this year, you won't have accomplished anything in the last decade and we'll fold you too.

Florida just got Conn Smythed by someone who couldn't be a "main" guy and had never accomplished anything.

You are right, lets just forget about the fact that Backlund has been in the league for like 10 more seasons.

They still haven't accepted the Flames won't rebuild. I'll take the wins while I can lol. Better to spend that money on Backlund than another Brouwer/Neal

If this is true, it's a fantastic deal for a guy who bleeds Calgary red. The term and AAV are both exactly what the team needs, and I'll be shocked if Backs doesn't outperform that contract by the time it's done. I'd love to see him retire a Flame.

They're 1.5 years of age apart.

Yeah, but that's totally different because reasons.

Fold the franchise.

2 * 4.5 is perfect, respectful to Backlund but also a very team friendly deal.

What a dumb take. Stick to your own argument - why are you hopping on others? Nothing better to do?

My bad. I thought you were referring to Tkachuk for some reason.

Nothing wrong with that contract. Even if you’re on team rebuild (I am), this contract if true does nothing to cripple their flexibility moving forward.

Give me short term deals all day.

Mikael Backlund is basically the Flames version of Jere Lehtinen. Any time you get players that make everyone around them better always, you keep them for as long as you can. He's an incredibly talented player and I'm glad that he will be the next captain of the Flames.

I don’t think Backlund is a 4.5MM player at age 35 or 36, but I can think of worst places we’ve spent the money.

No problem. I was talking about Marchessault as I’m sure you know now. Isn’t that why they were happy Las Vegas took him? Someone else mentioned Ovechkin already. And Crosby was a whiner until he won all those Stanley Cups and gold medals. Ray Bourque had never won anything until he got sent to Colorado without a “C” and then did.

I am saying that these narratives aren’t very helpful when evaluating a player. Of all the problems the Flames have, Backlund is not on that list.

I look it as 6m for the first year and 3m for the second year. Very fair.

This is a great Backlund comparable.

Very happy that backs will likely play out his career in red. I remember being very hyped for him as a prospect, especially when he came to play for the rockets. He became a totally different player than I imagined he would, but his two way play and ability to nurture that in other players has been a real treat to watch.

Deserving of the captaincy.

He placed second to Dube in fitness. That paired with his hockey IQ, I wouldn't bet against him getting another contract after this one. Players can be effective on the other side of 35.

Mikael Backlund AKA Backs...KHL bound by 2025, book it!

Bring back WhereRUChrisO'Sullivan because his disappointment in this news would be more fun than Keenan87's sadness.
