Still would prefer Rasmus as captain, but happy with Backlund and the deal

The 'he should be traded, because the team hasn't won anything' is - to be frank - one of the stupidest arguments going. It's a team game. And a team needs LOTS of good players.
Washington hadn't won a thing with Ovechkin, for 12 years! Idiots, to stick with the same guys who obviously couldn't get past the 2nd round.
Jarome Iginla never won a thing.

I'm not a huge Backlund fan (don't hate the guy either), but I am a fan of a player signing a team friendly deal because he wants to be here. Doesn't happen a lot here so you might as well enjoy it. It makes me like the guy a little bit more.

Comparing hall of fame first line wingers and a #3C is a bit of a stretch. He should have been traded instead IMO. Calgary falls in love with support players, keep the team together...this time will be different for sure!

I guess we just give away a good player for free and alienate the longest standing member of the team when the franchise is trying to repair a reputation of a place people don't want to play. That makes sense right?

That contract doesn’t stop him from getting traded. Especially if the cap increases next season. Backlund probably gets a late first or a second and B prospect at the deadline. I won’t be sweating on missing out on that this year.

Sorry, but that's ridiculous. How many 'support players' have spent their whole career with the Flames? How many of these 'support players' have been good value for the contracts for pretty much every single year of their careers? How many of these 'support players' are names captain?
Teams need players. Backlund is a good player. And that cap hit (if true) is a GREAT deal for him.
Saying he should be traded, because the team hasn't won anything, is - again - the stupidest argument going.

Well if he can't win, then why would anyone trade for him?

I like how some people think that because a player has not won with the Flames that they are somehow incapable of winning. Like if Backlund was traded to Colorado they’d immediately be a bubble team. Absolutely ridiculous. Backlund was excellent value for his contract. If all of our contracts were as much value for money as Backlund, we’d be perennial cup contenders.

I don't get why there is such a rush to sign a 3rd line center....why not wait till the end of the year and keep your options open

Because he is a decent 3rd liner. I am not denying he isn't an NHL player. Just saying the Flames should have turned a page instead of now likely making him captain without winning anything.

Is it easy to name ten or even five 3rd line centers who are far better than Backlund?

He's a decent 2nd liner at age 35. He and Danault are probably the best 3rd liners in the league.

Yeah, but Colorado won't slap a "C" on his jersey. They have their leaders and Backlund would be part of the supporting cast.
In Calgary, he has been one of the "main" guys for a decade and the team hasn't accomplished anything.

Good deal for both sides. Would be good to see Backlund retire a Flame.

Lmao imagine being upset about a guy singing a team friendly deal as one of the best 3rd line center in the league, a guy who would easily get 3x5 or more next off season with the cap going up.
To the crowd that keeps saying should have traded the guy have no understanding of what kind of morale impact that would have. The whole teams views him as the captain and if Flames traded him for no reason that would not go over great at all, I bet Lindholm would love to sign with the Flames after seeing that happen lol.
Dude puts up 56 points, is one of the fittest Flames for years, great in playoffs then signs for below market value and people complain hahaha
