I doubt he hits a new career high at age 34.

He's more like to only hit high 40's than get to 60.

And that would be just fine.

60 point player? Since when??? 56 last year was his best ever....at 34 years old. 39 points the year before. His average is like 44 points per 82 games....and he's 34. He isn't going to be improving on that and signing him to even 4 million is a stretch.

I would rather find a GM that believes Backlund is a 60 point player and Fleece them in a trade than sign him at this point.

Yeah I don’t want to pay for Backlund for his play when he was 33. Pay him for what you expect in his 35 and 36 seasons if it’s a two year deal.

The trade market for Backlund and others was already canvassed and no team with a need for those players has the cap room for them.

There is a reason why our UFA's have not been traded nor signed.

Pretty good for a 3rd line C, I would say.
Which only shows how bad the team played last year. Backlund is not the 2nd best forward on this team. He had an outlier career year, it happens.

If there's no trade market for them, there won't be a huge market for them as a UFA, so they shouldn't need a big contract.

The team needs to move on and get younger, not keep the same team together and get older.

If there is some delusion with this team that makes them think they could win the cup this year, then sure don’t trade your UFA’s, BUT don’t extend any of the 28 year old plus ones. At this point, I’d rather they let them walk for free then sign any old veteran on a long term contract.

I’ll take the cap space.

I feel the same way but it’s clear thats not the direction the organization is going to pick.

Big difference, as cap goes up next year. Plus lesser teams may have an interest if no assets need to be given up.

Plus no guarantee they sign with Calgary.

I think the simplest answer is that the Flames don't want to cut bait with Lindholm, Backlund, or Hanifin yet and are hoping they get them signed 20 games in.

They also haven’t received any offer they thought worry.

Moving players with cap for value has been virtually impossible this year.

Another grain of salt moment:

James Wilson of nhltraderumors speculates that the Avs may circle back to Mikael Backlund, with D Samuel Girard coming back. The latest info seems to be that Backs will sign with the Flames, but if he was still on his way out, this would be a good scenario. Girard has been buried a bit on the Avs, with Makar and Toews ahead of him on the depth chart, but he's a swift-skating, puck-moving offensive D with great hockey sense who could blossom with more responsibility. It would make even more sense if the team plans to move Hanifin at some point.

I don't buy there wasn't a market for a number 1 centre or top pairing D in their 20s. Especially given their value contracts and the Flames desire to bring back a roster player (aka cap). I would have expected Hanafin to have been traded and Lindholm to have been signed or traded by now. But it sounds like the Flames didn't even try and sign Lindholm this summer.

We know several players are taking a "wait and see" approach to signing extensions. It looks like the Flames are taking the same approach.

That makes a little sense I guess. Huberdeau's big contract starts this season. If he doesn't find chemistry with Lindholm or the Flames falter out of the gate then maybe they don't want to be committed to Lindholm for 8 more years. Add the uncertainty of other players signing extensions and maybe waiting was part of the plan.

Regardless of the reason why, waiting this long is a gamble. The Flames need a 1C and should have been negotiating with Lindholm early. They should have traded Hanafin as soon as they felt they couldn't sign him to an extension.

I am a big fan of Girard. He is a smooth skater and enjoys having the puck on his stick. Prone to a few bad passes now and then but in general he moves a team in the right direction . Only 25 too...

Only one year younger than Hanifin

How do they compare?

If you can get a player like Girard for Backlund - straight up - you make that deal every day that ends in "y". No brainer and makes the market stronger for Hanifin.

Isn't Girard always injured? Concussion issues?

He’s not physically robust, no.

The Habs have been rumoured to be interested in Girard. Maybe a three-way deal could be worked out.
