I'm loving the rebuild thinking, and hope it finally happens. There is no way hte current core can win, and we need to be preparing to win 4-6 years from now.

Three thoughts:

1. We should be retaining as much as possible for lindholm, toffoli, backlund, hanifin to maximize value.

2. We should be using free cap space that is created to take contracts from other team where they will include picks

3. I'm not sold on only targeting first rounders. The organization has one bright spot which is picks outside the first round, so getting a handful of 2nd and 3rd round picks would be valuable in the rebuild.

The other deals sound reasonable (though I’d switch out Rosen for Savoie). Lidstrom is a stretch - really hard to see NYR signing Lindholm longterm unless they move out major cap.

DET or CAR still seem like the most likely destinations for Lindholm. CAR asked about him at the deadline, and there’s no reason to think they were just looking for a 1 season rental - they need a #2C long-term. And both teams have lots of cap space to extend him.

To DET: Lindholm
To CAL: Berggren, DET 2023 1st (17th OV), DET 2023 2nd

To CAR: Lindholm
To CAL: Necas, Rees

I'm not sure any other team has the number of useful players on 1-year reasonable contracts as we do, even without retention.

Gotta take advantage.

I mean, I’ll gladly eat crow. He’s just been underwhelming to me every time I’ve seen him play.

Could always be the classic case of Bennett, where a change of scenery kicks his career into high gear.

That Detroit deal is roughly something I proposed a while back. I think Lindholm/Larkin down the middle is very, very enticing for Detroit. Would even try to get that second as a 2024/2025 pick and make it a conditional 2nd/1st if Detroit makes the playoffs.

The Carolina one doesn’t make much sense to the Canes. Necas is an RFA, Lindholm isn’t.

I don't think Carolina adds in that deal, I think we would have to.

Cap space and picks are an asset that doesn't mean you have to go full last place re-build and the team needs to do a better job of realizing that.

Backlund for Newhook (Colorado)

Hanifin for 13 + Rosen (Buffalo)

Lindholm (50% retained) for 23 + Lafreniere (New York)

Toffoli for 30 + Drury (Carolina)

Trade 4 of the UFAs. Get 4 young pieces that are NHL ready or close to it (Newhook, Lafreniere, Drury, Rosen) and end up with 4 1sts in the draft (13, 16, 23, 30)

Forwards: Huberdeau, Kadri, Coleman, Mangiapane, Dube, Newhook, Lafreniere, Drury, Coronato, Pelletier, Duehr, Ruzicka, Rosen
Dmen: Weegar, Anderson, Kylington, Tanev, Zadorov, Gilbert
Goalies: Markstrom, Wolf, Vladar

And 3 extra 1st round picks and $12M in extra cap space. Honestly I don't think the short term or long term outlook of that team is much worse.

Pretty much a dream scenario given the current situation. I don’t know if you’ll get that much, but this is the line of thinking Conroy needs to take.

Can also flip Vladar for a mid round pick or two as well.

Those 7 Eastern Conference teams all want to take the next step and you need to create a bidding war on your pieces.

Carolina’s pick is 30th.
New York’s pick is 23rd.
Detroit’s pick is 17th (also have 9th but I doubt they are willing to trade it.
Ottawa does not have a first round pick.
Buffalo’s pick is 13th.
Columbus’s pick is 22nd.
Pittsburgh’s pick is 14th.
Colorado’s pick is 27th.

I would say Carolina or Colorado are good fits for Backlund with their picks. Unless they want Lindholm in which case it will cost them their top prospect/young player (Jarvis or Newhook, for example).

New York, Detroit, Columbus, and Pittsburgh all have 2023 first round picks that seem like a reasonable return for Lindholm. Depending on which team/pick, they will likely have to add in a young prospect/player.

I’m not sure what Ottawa could offer other than whatever they get for Debrincat. They could get a 1st round pick for Debrincat that they could then flip to Calgary in a package for Lindholm.

As rough as it can be to rebuild, it surprised us all last time how quickly the rebuild was. I know some would say it went too quickly last time(missing out on the McDavid draft)… but the flames still built a competitive team that looked like a real contender in the league. It didn’t work out but it shows that it could turn around pretty quickly.

The last time, the wild card that accelerated the flames’ rise out of a rebuild was that they already had a star/franchise player (Gaudreau) developing in the organization before they started their rebuild in 2013. While I don’t think the flames have a prospect/player in the system that will become an elite scorer of Gaudreau’s level at the moment… I think the flames do have a player in the system that could end up having a similar effect on accelerating the rebuild in Dustin Wolf. Throughout the entire last rebuild, the flames never had reliable goaltending. For that entire time, goaltending was consistently their biggest weakness. If Wolf reaches his potential, the flames could have that piece solved early on in this rebuild (if it happens).

Huberdeau could act as the modern Hudler for this rebuild. Acting as a fantastic mentor and elite player for young players to play on a line with. Hudler was such a great fit with Gaudreau and Monahan in that 2014-2015 year. He was the type of player that made players better around him… exactly what you want for young players entering the league. I honestly believe Huberdeau could fit this mold perfectly as well.

Necas is what Lindholm was 5 years ago, no way they make that trade.

Sweet. Mathews can drag this team to 9th place, and then walk.

This one is funny to me. Not too interested in re-signing in Calgary Noah? Enjoy Buffalo.......

If I were the flames and Carolina calls, I would push for Jarvis. If he is not on the table then I would prefer to trade with any of the other teams that are in on Lindholm. Carolina’s pick is likely the worst of any 1st round pick offered for Lindholm so they need to bring something more valuable to the table.
