Has Markstrom confirmed that he was frustrated with the flames ownership?
If his frustrations stems from the perceived fact that NJ leaked the information maybe that leads to him choosing to no longer waive to go there.
Maybe he isn't frustrated with the Flames but is frustrated with NJ, just a thought to add to why the deal didn't go down.

Well, yeah, but how's Cal Foote doing this season?

I really think now is the time to trade Markstrom. I can’t see the team doing better down the stretch without Hanifin and Tanev. Markstrom could very well be under siege from here on out and could severely hurt his value.

The return is definitely underwhelming from what we’ve seen in the past. Not exactly on Conroy, but there is an element to that GM role that needs negotiation skills. We’ve been too nice accommodating and need to be a little more ruthless like Vegas is.
I also wonder if Hanifin just isn’t as good as everyone thinks. Many of our players to be honest. We’ve been a middling team a lot of years, inconsistent and JG and MT drove those up years. Our players just aren’t that good to command the haul we think they should get. Curious to see if Hanifin is a first or second pair in Vegas. We have to play our guys higher up the lineup because we don’t have the stars, thus we think these guys are worth top line players because they are in that role by default.
What I’d like to see, if the market is that weak, then we should also be the benefactor of that. In the search for a young U25 center, the market should continue to be soft and hopefully the Flames can get one without selling the farm.

Hanifin had people mentioning Lundell as the return.

I woke up this morning thinking about this trade and emotionally feeling disappointment even through rationally it’s on par with similar trades for rental D. I blame CP and that 2- to 3-hour window where we were all salivating over (it turns out, unrealistic) prospects and roster players. Same thing happened with Dallas.
Speculation is fun, but it’s a double-edged sword. Maybe next time I won’t get carried away, but I doubt it.

What pieces do we have left to trade? Just Markstrom?

Button & the scouting staff have been well above average the last few seasons considering the lack of picks the Flames have had.
If you listened to Conroy last summer discuss other players in later rounds who were snagged right before the Flames were going to select him (Kaprizov) Tod & his staff have earned the opportunity to dig in on multiple picks over a few years.
Plus being a rebuilding/retooling team makes it easier to attract college or CHL free agents because spots are open.
The key thing as they accumulate talent is to not kid themselves like Treliving did that they were ahead of schedule & flush the highest pick the franchise has had in the last 9 years down the toilet for Hamonic.

Oh absolutely. We get GIFs and news that another team is in play, then find its Vegas and we're all amped because they weren't in the mix and its exciting but we forget that Vegas has an even smaller prospect pool than Florida and Tampa and don't look at recent returns for other players around this deadline.
But I'm with you. I'll get amped again the moment someone here breaks news or has a fun tease for us. I'll let me mind wander and then be let down again even though its my fault for getting ahead of myself. Thats being a fan.

One could make the case for Mangiapane and possibly Rooney (for reliable fourth-line depth), but the returns will be significantly underwhelming.

In the case of Mangiapane, I’d rather have the cap space and roster spot. He’s an under productive winger right now, with a good 200 foot game. I feel like a few of our kids could develop into that quickly playing on that line.
If there’s a taker willing to pay fair price then I think you move him. A couple of 2nds?

Markstrom (NJ) or Vladar (Phi)
I also hope the Flames utilize cap space to collect some draft picks with helping out in retention on 3-way trades.

Can't remember who posted it, but said if Markstrom is off the table then Vladar is off to Philly.
At this point I see that being far more likely too, if we even pull that trigger. At least he has one more year left at $2.2 million so a bit of term might help bump up his value slightly. Markstrom would be an extremely complex trade to make IMO.

Markstrom has gotta go. If Conroy has learned any lesson here, it’s the earlier you move ‘em, the more you get back. Git ‘er dun.

They only have one retention slot left. If they don't use it for Markstrom, I wouldn't be surprised to see them use it as a third party in another deal.

He's 81st in the NHL in 5v5 Production among forwards and he gets very little PP time. He has the 95th highest salary in the NHL amongst forwards.
I don't get why people seem to think his production is so bad for what he is paid...

They have already used 2 retention spots, only 1 left, which they might need to trade Marky or Mangi.
I suppose Sharky, Kuz, and Miromanov could be other trade bait for modest returns.
