Apparently it's pretty well known among NHL scouts that the drop off is a little steeper and a little earlier this year.
I still have the utmost faith in our scouting staff to make the most out of any late 1st round picks, but we could very well be looking at them trying to trade up with multiple firsts that they get back in order to draft quality.

Good, let them think that. Give us all your firsts, I trust our scouts more than GMs trading away first round picks trying to make reasons to make themselves feel better.

Outside of Tkachuk and Monahan, we've drafted out highest impact players in the 2nd-4th rounds.
With the amount of darts they're going to get to throw at the board, I trust our guys to find the diamonds in that 2nd or 3rd tier of players.
And lol.. this could very well be true. I do hope 1st round picks are undervalued this year! That favors a Flames tear down.

With how good the drafting has been, you'd think the team should have been doing their best to get more, not piss them away on guys that don't move the needle for the team.
Get lots of picks, draft a good team.

What if Nemec is on the table for a signed Hanifin?
Makes you wonder. they already have Luke Hughes and Dougie Hamilton. Their window is relatively now.

Zero chance, Nemec is already arguably already better than Hanifin and on his entry-level contract. Only way would maybe be Nemec for a signed Hanifin and retained Markstrom, but not sure the Flames do that.

A good team full of team-controlled players on ELCs or bridge deals that are cheaper and easier to manage.
So much easier to work with than 27-35 year olds you had to pay through the nose for that have you right up against the cap without even a guarantee of playoffs.
Hopefully this time they WAIT to add that big fish or free agent target until they're actually within a stone's throw of doing damage in the playoffs. Add to complete a good team, not to try to fast track the rebuild. Let it f-n cook!

I just don't see it, good young RH d-men are so hard to find.
Teams don't trade players they take with top 5 picks that soon unless they are forced to.

I agree, to be honest though I think a signed Hanifin is worth a bit more than that. Perhaps another prospect or pick.

I agree. I see them trying to set themselves up with Hanifin and Hughes on the left side and Nemec and Hamilton on the right. Elite top 4 in the making to go with 2 very good young centers.
Mercer, Holtz, Seigenthaler, 1sts probably are available to make this happen, and they get a goalie to boot.
They can afford to overpay to get that core.

There’s too many mouths to feed on a team of Hamilton, Hughes and Nemec. I just think of it that way. who is going to get the prime ice time on PP1 etc? I think they would all feel capable and deserving for it. I mean it’s a great problem to have but can’t be sustainable over the long term.

Yup somebody already posted something similar but if I had to guess it would look something like...
Markstrom (25% retention) for 2024 1st, Mercer, Vanecek
Hanifin (50% retention) for 2025 1st (or Holtz), Casey, Seigenthaler
It feels like too much...but feels like if Markstrom is moving it's going to be an overpay, and it feels about right for Hanifin. So I think it's probably pretty close to what's on the table and would probably be the craziest trade we've seen in the NHL in a while if it were to happen.

Said it all al9ng, just give me Mercer for Marky. If there's something more for a signing Hanifin, gravy.

I'm mainly looking for Mercer and a pick. If there are adds to that, that's icing on top.
This is the highest value Markstrom will ever have again. If you return a piece of your next core for your 34 year old goalie who's known to be a complete wildcard year to year, that's superb asset management.
