That would be embarrassing for an adult to do. Playing games like that would show serious immaturity. Just step up and tell the truth (or have your agent do it).

I think someone should make a note to see if Gross is still Johnny's agent in a few weeks' time.

Or...and I hate doing this, but it is possible that Johnny and Gross had a plan, had an ask, it was met and then his Wife/GF vetoed it.

It is possible that they made an ask, got an acceptance and then a variable was introduced that could not be accommodated.

Its possible. You take the Calgary contract and your wife is pissed? Ugh...granted, again, I'd go back and say: "You should have talked about this together and sorted it out ages ago."
When I negotiated with my company years ago for my move to Regina, we asked for everything. EVERYTHING. They gave it to us.

But there was definitely some apprehension and anxiety with moving away. I even mentioned to my boss at the time my wife was unsure. We even floated the idea of rejecting, using the excuse of my wife doesn't want to cause of her job and family. But we correctly surmised that that would be negotiating in bad faith. My professional fraternity is not very big either, and I would have sewered my reputation.

Not faulting the guy for vetoing cuz he wanted to be close to home. But if he knew there was a remote possibility of his wife not going for it, he should have said something to tre from the start.

I’d be interested to read this:

https://www.nhlpa.com/the-pa/certified-agents?range=G-H

Only player agents certified by the National Hockey League Players' Association are permitted to represent players in their dealings with NHL clubs. The NHLPA regulates the conduct of player agents under its Regulations Governing Agent Certification. The Agent Regulations set out the various terms under which agent duties must be performed, and include standards of conduct with which agents must comply. The NHLPA has the power to suspend, restrict, or terminate the certification of any agent for violation of these Agent Regulations.

Agreed. It's a defence mechanism for those who can't believe he didn't want to be in Calgary, and it's a pathetic look

Yeah, I think so too. I won't be surprise he'll get his 90 points next season but his team will miss the playoff. There are quite a few teams the Jackets need to leap over to make the playoff.

Gross would get new clients. People want ethical representation and the tactics blew up anyway. But he didn’t do anything like that and guess how teams are going to treat him and his clients going forward? How would you?
Yeah I don’t think it’s going to be as strict as the responsibility a lawyer has if their client he’s going to lie under oath.

Gaudreau reneged on a contract offer. Won’t be the first or last time you hear about a player doing that potentially during free agency negotiations.

It really does seem like Gross might have already apologized to the Flames org though. As I’ve said I’ve never seen an agent speak so fondly, and so quickly about an organization he wasn’t able to come to terms with.

It was weird and makes more sense with what’s coming out now.

They just gave Gaudreau and Gudbranson nearly 14M a year to join their 80 point team

It seems like a move that might put them in 10th place. They aren't doing anything in that division.

I’ve heard from my sources that his wife didn’t want to work for AHS. So, yes, his wife is involved.

Yep. Right now they aren't, but they will. To think having Gaudreau won't move that needle is absurd.

I want to be clear, I've been open and up-front about being unhappy about 'blaming his wife' and I'm not even doing that. I'm just wondering if that is a family consideration that we may have been unaware of.

I'm dealing in good faith (Irony! Hey-oh!) but I'm just trying to put pieces together.

If he or she didnt want anything to do with Calgary? No problem. I'm just trying to understand why, and management should as well, so that it doesnt become a persistent problem.

"We didnt want to be in Calgary."

Cool. No problem. Short. Succinct. To the point. I would respect that.

But if thats the case then you should have told Flames management that eons ago.

In the end either way it really feels like this was botched by Gaudreau and in the end maybe I’m too soft but I do feel a little bad for the guy.

He left a lot of money on the table, enough money that it’s more than the average career earnings of NHLer.

He ruined his relationship with the fans and organization Calgary. A relationship that was really strong, and that his immediate family really seemed to appreciate and embrace. To be honest I was surprised with how fast his sisters and uncles tweeted their appreciation for Calgary yesterday.

He still didn’t get to go home and live his childhood dream of playing for the Flyers.

And You can’t convince me he’s actually thrilled to be a Columbus Blue Jacket and at least for today he certainly didn’t seem thrilled. I’ve seen Johnny much happier and more engaged in just normal press conferences here in Calgary.

I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a top profile free agent in any sport end up with an outcome that really seems like it was not at all what they wanted. If the rumor that he reneged on the take it or leave it deal is true though…Karma is a bitch as they say.

How many points did Vegas have in the worst division in hockey last season?

I doubt very much that it’s as strict and Gross may have made it clear in the meeting how it came about if he had nothing to do with it.

If JG went against his advice (making Gross lose face) and he lost $17M as result (some of which would go to Gross) Gross might decide he’s going to cut him loose anyway. After all, Johnny isn’t in new negotiations for 7 years. Gross has made his money on this contract.

I'm not saying she is not involved, of course the is involved in where the family go. But it the whole timing thing. If it's true that she doesn't want to work for AHS, I'm sure she would've told her husband that. Then it's on Gaudreau to make a decision in a timely manner and not a few hours before FA opens. What I'm saying is, it's on Gaudreau string the Flames along when he has no intention of re-signing. And that's not on the wife!

My wife works for AHS. She and most of her co-workers don’t want to work for AHS either. It’s a terrible employer to work for. Of course with her hubby’s income, she has the clear option not to without sewering his contract negotiations. There are non-AHS positions in nursing. Which circles back to the A in AHS being the big obstacle for her.

Edit…as if she’s really going to work in nursing in the foreseeable future anyways. With the family income they have from Gaudreau’s income I don’t understand why she’d plan on working anyways with a baby about to enter their lives. Most parents would love to be able to afford a parent to stay at home. If she doesn’t then I have to disagree with her priorities.

What an unbelievable end game. His comments today are flippant towards the team, organization, city, and fans that drafted, developed, marketed, supported, and unrelentingly cheered for him.

So he just has to bend over backwards and do what she says? What if he wanted to stay and was trying to talk to her every day and convince her and finally at the 11th hour she still said no?

That's exactly what I'm trying to say. The wife has the right to decide where she wants to raise their kid and where she wants to spend her time. And I have no problem she is making Gaudreau leave Calgary. What I'm saying all along is, she wouldn't have told him that's what she wants a few hours before FA opens. She have been living in Calgary for quite a few months, she must've told the husband that she doesn't want to stay. What I have problem with is some here saying directly or in directly, the reason Gaudreau stringing the Flames along is because of the wife.

Then don’t make the offer of 10.5 until she is on board.
