When it comes to the cover being better than the original, I am going with,

Colin James - Why'd you lie?

The original is by a guy named Morgan Davis, its good, but CJ really does it justice.

Chris Cornells version of Billie Jean is pretty darn good.

Somebody mentioned Motley Crue... but for the wrong song. Smokin' In The Boys Room was a cover.

I also liked George Thoroughgood's cover of One Bourbon, One Scotch and One Beer better than the original.

Mick Harvey's two Serge Gainsbourg cover albums (Intoxicated Man and Pink Elephants) are brilliant in all aspects. A bit of an obscurity, but highly recommended.

I have to put this among the best covers ever, for the sheer impossibility of it. Apocalyptica covering Sepultura's Refuse, Resist. It rocks, with cellos! Awesome!

Since they started as a cover band (doing mostly Metallica), Apo has tons of other covers too. Here's a more recent live version of Creeping Death with a drummer.

And here's an old live version of One:

I've never heard that one, but that reminds me that Faith No More covered War Pigs pretty nicely. Nothing spectacular, but Mike Patton is such an awesome vocalist, and Ozzy isn't, so there's one cover I definitely prefer over the original.

Also, some may crucify me for this, but I really like the Scissor Sisters version of Comfortably Numb (Pink Floyd). Has a nice video too, too bad it doesn't seem to be on YouTube. I don't really like covers if they're not actually different than the original.

(As another note, I find Buckley's version of Hallelujah to be mostly irritating.)

Nice choice Itse.

I'm still holding out hope that Scissor Sisters will turn into a great band. There is so much early Elton John in their good stuff.

Speaking of covers that are different from the originals...

Tori Amos Raining Blood (Slayer)

I love it, I didn't post it earlier because I don't think there are very many fans of Tori here, and a lot of metal fans.

Well, I thought their second album was excellent, and they throw a good party live too, so I'd call them good already, if not great. Of course, it depends on your use of words.

Garth Brooks covering Hard Luck Woman. I remember it from this Kiss tribute CD I picked up a long time ago. Have to dig it out and find some other covers worth posting.

agreed with you on this one. Smoking in the Boys Room sucks. Helter Skelter by the Crue kicks ass.

Good pick. I like their version of "Under my thumb" as well.

Switching gears I would also say that Rufus Wainwright's version of "Across the universe" is quite good.

any punk band and "kids in america"
I think there must be some rule somewhere that if youre a punk band you have to do a cover of "kids in america"

that or some other song from the 80's
speaking of covers from the 80's
Presidents of hte United States of America - Video killed the Radio Star

I actually used to have a MP3 cd I titled "I hate the eighties" that was primarily covers, lent it to a friend and he lost it...Ive been trying to find the backup for ages but with no luck...I miss that CD
