For the slightly less obscure, Kate Bush doing Elton John's 'Rocket Man' (very different take on it, a little bizarre, but great).

Absolutely HATE the Gwen Stefani cover of Talk Talk's 'It's My Life' and the Gary Jules cover of Tears For Fears' 'Mad World'. I liked the originals so much better.

Hey...I don't think anyone said 'All Along The Watchtower'. Hendrix did his infamous version a year after Bob Dylan recorded it.

Speaking of Kate Bush, here is the Futureheads with Hounds of Love:

okay, thought of some more I like...

Eric Clapton cover of 'I Shot The Sherriff' (Bob Marley)

Metallica doing 'Turn The Page' (Bob Seger)

CCR cover of 'Heard It Through The Grapevine' (Gladys Knight & the Pips)

Beatles cover of 'Long Tall Sally' (Little Richard)

Nazareth with two covers: 'Love Hurts' (Everly Brothers) and This Flight Tonight' (Joanie Mitchell)

Aretha! 'Respect' was an Otis Redding song

and of course Samantha Fox doing 'I Can't Get No Satisfaction' (Rolling Stones)...okay, kidding on that one

^^^^

Not a big fan of KD Lang, but she does a decent job on that song too... Leonard Cohen even said that it is "her" song now.

Tori Amos' cover of 97 Bonnie and Clyde (Eminem)

Queensryche's cover of Scarborough Fair (Simon and Garfunkel)

I won't say this third one is better, but it freaking rocks.

DMB with Warren Haynes cover of Cortez the Killer (Neil Young)

Im sure that if there was an "anti-thanks" button this would probably receive a fair amount, for suggesting this...
but a few years ago there was an album released called Pink Floyd Redux which was done by a bunch of female Canadian artists.
Its a different take on Floyd, but was done rather well IMO
Ali Slaight - Hey you

Sarah Slean - Us and them

I am going to have to listen to all of these when I am on my home PC...

The one cover that always leaps to my mind being better by the cover band than the original is "Girl, you'll be a woman soon" By Neil Diamond, covered by Urge Overkill.

Radiohead's Airbag on the streets of Lyon.

Not better than Radiohead's version but this one of the best covers of Radiohead I've heard. By a street band no less.
