Especially if someone like Dal Colle is who they prefer (but I somehow doubt that).

And people are ridiculous for suggesting we include Sven. ####ing really? To move from Bennett/DC to a Reinhart/Ekblad (which is, according to scouting, only a slight improvement if any at all) is worth Sven? Get the hell out.
I wouldn't be surprised frankly to see a Sven + 1st for Ekblad scenario. Burke is on record saying he doesn't care what he gives up if he gets what he wants. If what he wants is Ekblad, which makes sense, look for him to make a huge run at him. If flames are picking 5th, sven wouldn't be bad value imo.

If we're picking outside of the top 5, then Sven isn't terrible value cause there is a fair drop off after that, but even then something like a 3rd should be coming back IMO. But if we're picking from the top group, no way in hell would trading Sven be good value. Only a late 1st, for me.

If Ekblad turns out to be bottom pairing material and we gave up a top 6 player in Sven as well as someone like Bennett or Dal Colle who could end up being impact players themselves, we'll feel pretty stupid.

I think Ekblad will be better than that. But he's not as sure a thing as Jones.

But of course we can go back and forth with that game all day.

There's about as much chance if Sven not being an nhl regular as there is Ekblad being a bottom pairing guy. I could see Sven being in the deal for that #1 pick.

I agree with the bold for the most part, but the point djsFlames makes still stands. You're not just giving up Sven if you're trading from the top 5. You are giving up Sven plus one of Bennett/Drasaitl/Dal Colle/etc. If that is the swap straight up, it's an overpayment on the Flames part IMO.

I was the one who suggested it and it wasn't suggested straight up. It was our 1st plus Baertschi for their first plus one of their 2nd round picks.

Obviously an overpayment. However, if Burke covets Ekblad, and buff doesn't wanna play ball, he WILL overpay. It would suck to see Sven go for a bumping of 3 or 4 spots, but I can see it happening, and if it does, I'll get used to the idea pretty quick knowing Ekblad is in the fold.

I am in no way advocating a Baertschi trade, but if it had to happen, I'd prefer something like:

Sven + 4th or 5th overall (Dal Colle/Draisaitl/whoever) for 1st overall (Ekblad) + Justin Bailey or Nick Baptiste. Both 2013 picks (2nd and 3rd rounders) who are right wingers with size.

I would hope that this isn't an absolute. As good as Ekblad may turn out to be, I'd hate to see the Flames give up more than they need to. Sven + 1st for a higher 1st plus pick/prospect makes more sense. I'm not advocating a Sven trade but if he was involved I'd want to see us get value in return especially considering the top few guys in the draft seem to have very little separation aside from the position they play. I guess it's in all in how much you value Ekblad though.

I saw your post earlier but I got the impression he was responding to Major Major's post directly above his. That was a Sven + first for the higher first proposal with nothing coming back as I interpreted it.

A scenario to factor in:

With any luck we'll see an exodus of veteran UFAs at the trade deadline. Let's say Cammy, Stempniak & Butler are traded, and Granlund, Knight & Billins get called up. I honestly believe that injection of youth into this lineup sparks this team to go on a winning streak. Obviously there's no way we make the playoffs, but knowing our luck we could end up drafting anywhere from 5th to 10th.

The Brian Burke we all know and love(?) would be in prime position to pull the trigger on Pronger trade 2.0

Tavares done for the Olympics and perhaps beyond. Looking like the Isles will finish below the Flames this year.

They are embarrassing, but I can't help but admit that I'm a little impressed. I didn't realize how hard it was to truly suck your way to the bottom. We're icing the worst team in franchise history and we won't even finish bottom four.

Extent of John Tavares' Olympic-ending knee injury won't be known til MRI/re-evaluation on Thursday but sense out of Sochi is it's not good.

NYI anxiously awaiting word on extent of injury/how much NHL time Tavares will miss. Hockey Canada doctors will be in contact with NYI docs.

If the lottery was run fairly then the Flames should win it this year. Out of the other teams with us in the bottom (Edmonton, NYI, Florida, Buffalo) we've never picked in the top 5. Not to mention three of those teams have a combined 10 top 5 picks in the last five years, 4 of which are 1st overall.

Time for the teams that don't try to lose on a nightly bases to be rewarded for once in the draft. These franchises are just a joke.

And I for one will gladly welcome our new Beardy overlord.

That would be an unfair running of the lottery though

I'll take us going full Flame again this year if the hockey gods will shine on us next year and get us in the top 2.
