Where did you get this info from?
Last year, the Flames invited 4 prospects to their mini-combine. Monahan, Klimchuk, Poirier and Petan. Seems to me that Petan was the guy they would have been trying to get. Feaster also seemed to sort of covet players like Petan - exceptional skill, but a question mark in size.
As for the Ekblad/Reinhart dilemma (not that I think there will be one, unless the Flames draft 1st over-all), I kind of think about it this way.
Flames have managed to find some pretty damn good defencemen over the last years. Regehr, Giordano, Bouwmeester, Phaneuf. All easily top 4. All probably top pairing in their primes on good teams.
Compare that to the center issues with this team over the years. Best Flames have filled that position was with Conroy and Langkow - no slouches at all, but neither would be a top centermen on any team. Jokinen was the only (at the time) legitimate shot at finally filling that hole, but it failed.
Top tier centers are available much less often, and are much more rare than very good defencemen.
I still say the Flames draft the BPA - if it is Ekblad by the time the Flames get up there (even if it is 1st, 2nd or for some reason, later in the draft) then of course you take Ekblad. I just think the Flames shouldn't make it an issue to fill in organizational holes at the draft.
A couple of years ago, D and RW were organizational strengths, with LW and especially C being weak. Now look at it. LW is probably the strongest. Center is probably the next strongest, followed by D, and a very weak RW. Thing can change in a hurry, and all a team must keep on doing at a draft table is select the very best players at any position that they feel project into being the very best players in the NHL.
