Dal Colle's 8 goals and 12 assists in 12 games in the playoffs looks pretty outrageous. Confusing the issue is ISS listing Dal Colle at centre and Bennett at LW assuming that wasn't just a spreadsheet typo by them (their head scout has called Dal Colle a centre as well.)
This is the first draft where I don't need to be desperately hoping that one of the guys I really like drops because there's 5 guys I really like the sounds of and we're guaranteed a choice of two. We get to just kick back and relax and see how it all falls and which direction the Flames decide to go. An elite talent should be added to the stable this June.
|
This just wouldn't be CP style
Personally, I just wish they could draft now and get it over with. All the 'what-if?' scenarios get me confused.

I don't follow much of these young guys so I don't pretend I know who is the best player amongst the Top 5. I just thought Florida might go after a defenseman and pick Ekblad. Or they might pick one of the Sams so I am not sure. Buffalo with the second pick I think will definitely pick one of the Sams especially if Florida pick Ekblad. I would think they might go after Bennett as from what I heard he plays very similar to Doug Gilmour. Edmonton definitely is looking at a defenseman so if Ekblad is available, they wouldn't think twice about it but this is the Oilers so you never know. I am hoping they leave one of the Sams alone for the Flames pick. Like I said you never know what the Oilers will do. They might pick one of the Sams knowing the Flames are very much interested in one of them, then later on trade them somewhere for a couple of young talented roster defensemen.... just to make the Flames mad. I am hoping to see the Reinhart brothers (Max and Sam) playing together for the Flames but I will settle for Bennett as well.
|
Who would have guessed that the Flames would make a deal with the Oilers for Smid either? I don't think the old rivalry will mean much until both teams are playoff bound.

I agree that we can't really go wrong: I am hoping we land one of Reinhart/Ekblad/Bennett, but if we end up with a Draisaitl or Dal Colle we might actually be in just as good a position.
Dal Colle has lots if potential to improve, especially as he physically matures and learns to use his big frame to his advantage. He's a potential powerforward, even though he isn't currently playing in that style. His NHL-calibre shot and vision make him a solid choice.
Draisaitl is in a similar situation; a couple of small improvements to his game and he'll be a deadly scoring threat. Improving his skating technique would put him in the really elite tier of prospects. Bit of a risk involved, because if his skating doesn't improve he might be a bit slow for the NHL, but there's potential there for him to come on leaps and bounds.
I'm just excited to see which name Brad Treliving calls out. June can't come soon enough!

At least Draisaitl admits the need to work on his skating. Many of the large centers are not speedsters (Kopitar, Getzlaf, Thornton, etc.) but they get there. Just make sure they have a speedy winger or swift skating defenceman on the ice to get things into the opposition zone.

Sam Reinhart named the WHL player of the Year and has been nominated for CHL player of the Year (to be announced at the Memorial Cup).

I'm really warming up to the idea of taking Draisaitl if he's available. Hard to go wrong with his size, vision and soft hands.
WHL player of the month for March - 19 points in 8 games.

I've been thinking lately that this could very well happen. If Buffalo picks Bennett or Draisaitl, neither of which would be all that crazy, I sort of see Edmonton passing on Reinhart for whichever of the two Buffalo didn't pick. Reinhart is too much like the guys they have and is neither big like Drai or gritty like Bennett.

Yeah, I see Edmonton passing on Reinhart as more likely than them passing on Bennett and Buffalo picking Bennett is a legit possibility.

Watching Bennett and Reinhart, Bennett's more in your face, and could put up more points in the NHL. However, Reinhart's overall game is superior and is the type of guy you win championships with. Just depends on what you are going for.

From yesterday
" Long Island News 12 producer Rob Del Muro with a good tip: Islanders GM Garth Snow attended a season-ticket holder event last week and told one fan, “It would be a safe wager on his part that we would utilize this year’s (first-round draft) pick.”

As per my poll selection, I'd opt to change it.
Ekblad is going 1st, Reinhart 2nd, Draitstl (I can't spell his name worth beans) 3rd, Bennett 4th, and Dal Colle 5th.

I used to be 75/25 Dal Colle over Draisaitl, but now it's 50/50.
It's fine if Draisaitl gets picked before we get to him, gives us a chance of getting Reinhart/Bennett.
Starting to think that the Isles get Dal Colle.
EDIT: I am starting to think we draft a center no matter what because of what Treliving said; drafting with centers and defenseman.

I'm warming up to the thought of drafting Draisaitl as well. I big, skilled centre in the mold of Kopitar? Yes please!

"Leon is a great hockey player but also a great teammate," Tuomie said. "His skill level is unbelievable. He thinks the game very well and makes players around him look better."
"That kid works so hard every shift," Bordeleau said. "I don't see how this kid doesn't go early. There's no one in this draft class who can protect the puck like him."
|
While he did poorly in the WJC with a poor team, he scored 45 points in his final 21 games while his team was fighting for a playoff spot. The next highest scoring forward on his team had 44 less points than him over the course of the season.
I'm 95% sure we take Leon or Sam Bennett. I'd be equally happy with both.
Sam seems to create a lot of offense through speed, Leon seems to 'slow down' when he gets the puck and has more of a dynamic scoring ability.
Speed IS a huge factor but Sam's speed doesn't seem as fast as even poirier, overall I'd be a tad happier with Leon..like 2% happier.

One thing going for Sam Bennett is that he's 7 or 8 months younger than Reinhart and Draisaitl. This can be a big difference for an 18 year old.

Well I see Reinhart having less sandpaper being a factor in the reason that Edmonton would see him as more of the same as opposed to Bennett.
This is going to be the longest 60 days ever.

here is a crazy trade idea....
Gio for Nurse and Edmonton First round pick next year
Edmonton is so desperate for help on the blueline they might consider that deal.

No. The only thing I want to give the Oilers is Measles. Nurse is their new saviour until he ends up to not be.
