That said I love Bennett too. I was really high on fleury Bcause of his physical tools. But I am willing to admit I was wrong. He is not a top 5 pick.

If Burke managed to trade up for another first, I'd prefer if it was for Alex Tuch. Especially if they get one in the Fleury range as both are likely to go around the same spot. I don't think the flames are as bad off in the defensive prospect area as some think. Kulak. Culkin, Ramage, Wotherspoon and Kanzig need a couple of years yet and the Flames top four IMO is good to go for a couple of seasons. Heck the top six D are set one could argue. A couple of UFA or trade tweaks could make the Flames D bonifide legit instead of trending upward.

Thought it might be interesting to discuss some later round picks, as an alternative to hashing out the same old arguments about the top 5.

Has anyone else been keeping an eye on the prospects who may be available with those 2nd & 3rd round picks? Using http://thehockeywriters.com/2014-nhl...ruary-edition/ to keep it simple, here are a few interesting prospects whose names I haven't often seen mentioned much who could potentially be available in the 2nd or 3rd round. Mainly looking at size & other attributes our prospect pool is lacking. Names in bold are prospects I find really intriguing:

34 LD Bycen Martin (WHL): 6'2", 185lb Calgarian smooth skating offensive D man (37 on CL)

38 RD Jack Glover (USHL): 6'3", 192lb Big, mobile 2-way D committed to U of Minnesota (82 on CL)

36 G Kaapo Kahkonen (FIN): 6'2", 201lb butterfly goalie with poise (77 on CL)

37 RD Jack Dougherty (USHL): 6'2", 186lb intelligent SAH D man (73 on CL)

50 LD Alexis Vanier (QMJHL): 6'5", 225lb hulking, physical D man with a huge shot & with slight skating issues (80 on CL)

53 RD Ben Thomas (WHL): 6'2", 193lb Calgarian, plays for Hitmen http://flames.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=698974 (87 on CL)

58 RD Aaron Irving (WHL): 6'1", 189lb gritty D man (67 on CL)

59 LW/RW Juho Lammikko (Finland): 6'3", 189lb skilled LH winger

60 RD Aaron Haydon (OHL): 6'3", 190lb strong, mobile D man.

62 RD Ryan Collins (USHL): 6'5", 205lb SAH D man; committed to NCAA

63 C/RW Nick Magyar (OHL): 6'2", 194lb complete game; high hockey IQ

67 D Nikita Tryamkin (KHL): 6'7", 228lb powerhouse, already playing w/pros (70 on CL)

75 G Linus Soderstrom (Sweden): 6'4" cool & calm goalie.

85 RD Brett Lernout (WHL): 6'4", 205lb monstrously physical D man

86 LD Travis Sanheim (WHL): 6'3", 181lb mobile D man (Hitmen)

89 LW Blake Clarke (OHL): 6'1", 199lb power winger (high skill; was ranked top 5 in preliminary rankings — year derailed by injury)

RD Ryan Mantha (USHL): 6'5", 225lb big, smart D man, though not overly physical or mobile (55 on CL)

I like Hunter Smith if he's still around for one of our 2nd round pick. 6'6 winger who can fight and put up some decent point this year.

Also he's the nephew of 1st year Calgary Flame Brad Smith (Motor City Smitty).

Swing and a miss.

For a guy with a hard on for defensemen you sure don't watch them much.

I like Eric Cornel with the #2 pick. By the rankings, he might be still around.

1st Rnd-C Sam Bennett
2nd Rnd-D
2nd Rnd-RW Spencer Watson played on Bennett's line in Kingston

Watson highlights from last year.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UTVImAtIfx4

Looks like a sniper and should be around 2nd round or 3rd round

He looks skilled but very small. Also, how much of his points have come due to Bennett's brilliance? Those would be my only reservations.

In the celebrations he doesn't look much smaller than Bennett, almost the same size. Just pointed him out as a RW prospect to add to the depth of the Flames.

Not sure Watson will be picked. I am pretty sure that Burke is going to pick with truculence/size as the first priority and then skill. I could be wrong, but our team is really lacking size and I hope Burke is able to switch that around with this draft at least, because the next draft will need to be picked by skill.

Watson has been falling like a rock. Was once considered as a 1st round pick. Think I read some think he might go 3rd round now

Fine, pick him in the 3rd round then. Lol Shouldn't matter when he goes. He obviously has skills. RWer with skill. Just saying.

He's not just small... at 5' 9" he's bordering on tiny for the NHL. If we were already the size of St Louis, LA, etc he might be a good mid round pick, but we already have our share of small but talented guys. We do need size, especially if we want to compete in the pacific division.

Sorry my last post got cut off while posting from my phone.

Also meant to add, really don't want any part of any guys that were projected to go 1st round and now are projected mid round picks unless there are major injuries involved.

Means the scouts found huge glaring holes in their game and the prospect did nothing or could do nothing to fix them, .

We need to start building out future third and fourth lines. We don't need more exclusively top six types.

Usually fallers tend to outright bust like Shane McColgan (who the Rangers took with our pick from the Tom Erixon trade). He was supposed to be a top 10 pick but fell to the 5th round, and wasn't even signed by the Rags.

The only players that should be taken are risers.

Um, I think you mixed those up. We are still looking for top six talent, who on our team is considered top 6 other than Monny, Hudler and Backlund?

We don't need any more small players and as the list above shows, there are a ton of good bigger D-men that should be available in the 2nd/3rd rounds that we can use more than small forwards.

From here on out, the only way we should get any small guys is if they literally are of Patrick Kane or Johnny Gaudreau's skill level.
