Is there any reason that the Oilers should retain their pick and select a forward? I know they WILL because they have no clue what they're doing, but the smart thing to do would be to dump the 3rd overall for help on the back end...right?
Either that or somehow move up a spot to get Ekblad. If Ekblad is gone I don't understand why they'd keep the pick.

I think Craig Buttons theory about trading the pick to the Islandes for Griffen Rienhart holds some water.
Islanders give their pick to Buffalo and still get a third overall this year.
Oilers get much needed help on the blue line with1 year development.
That is all contingent on Oil not getting a Ekblad which I could see them selling the farm to move up to get as well.
So why would Burke want to advertise that he doesn't want Draisaitl? It doesn't make sense...only reason why he would say this is putting up a smoke screen and implement some reverse psychology. By saying that you do not want a player will give other teams an advantage of what the Flames drafting list maybe like. Perhaps he does want Leon?
Also, maybe the Flames also want Ehlers? Sure they want truculence, but the ceiling of this prospect is extremely high. If the other teams above the Flames are considering Ehlers, Flames should also do their due diligence and look into the possibility of drafting him as well.
Where would giving away the McDavid pick next year rank?
The Islanders would have to do so much to sabotage their team next year that they should have no concern about being close to McDavid range next year.
A full season of Tavares and Okposo, goaltending that isn't horrfic, Hamonic/De Haan/Hickey a year older plus moves made knowing you have no first should and other teams actively trying for the first should easily keep them out of McDavid ranking.
The chances of them getting McDavid next year if they keep the pick are so slim that it isn't worth giving up Dal Colle/Draisatl then getting the 16th pick next year.
The Isles pick will not be the McDavid pick unless they by some insane fluke win the draft lottery.

I'm with moon on this one. Sends a pretty ####ty message to your fans if you hold onto next year's pick instead. You'd be telling them to expect some major league suckage coming up.

Fair enough, but it looks a much better draft next year.
You have more faith in them than their track record suggests.
Buffalo with three firsts overall next year(including their own) is pretty scary

Plus with Wang trying to sell the team, doubtful he or Snow will be around to see their carnage they've created for the organization.
I don't think the Isles will be close to a top pick next season. They'll keep this years. And try like the dickens to stock up for a playoff push in the offseason.

I think it is a large part about the message it sends as well.
If it were the Flames for example you could sell to the fans that next year is going to be a tough year anyways so maybe it makes sense for them to tank for next year.
But with the Isles they have been so awful for so long and now are starting to show some positive signs (pre-Tavares injury) that to tell them you are now going to actively go against that and tank would be a tough sell, especially since the likelihood of getting that top pick would be so low.
I think the Isles are much better off adding a Dal Colle this year and going forward with Tavares, Strome, Okposo, Dal Colle upfront and starting to add pieces this offseason rather than basically taking this off-season off and banking on getting that top pick (or top 3pick if you like Eichel and Hanafin as well) next. We have seen this year even with a bad team how hard it can be to get a top 3 pick and the Isles will have a superstar that can win games every night out to make the difference between 60 and 68 points.
