By the way, usually there are 2 or 3 guys in the top ten that flame out entirely or are severe disappointments
2004 - Barker Montoya Picard Valabik (Tukonen @11)
2005 - Pouliot Brule Skille Lee
2006 - To an extent Erik Johnson, Sheppard Frolik
2007 - Hickey Hamill Ellerby
2008 - Luke Schenn Filatov (Beach @11)
2009 - Glennie MPS
2010 - Gudbranson Niederietter Connolly McIlrath (Campbell @11)
So with Ashasx and I both arguing against Ritchie in particular, it's not as if top 10 picks never bust ever. We might both be wrong and FDW and the rest might be right, however, there is foundation to the fact that there is a precedent for top 10 guys disappointing severely, even though they appeared good at the time.

Too early to call the 2010 draft busts. No way Johnson is either, huge breakout season for him.

It isn't that some top picks fail, it's your observations and your reasoning behind saying that Richie will fail.

Totally agreed. Beyond confused why Caged Great would suggest he's a severe disappointment or has flamed out.

The last 15 pages of this thread make me hope this Fleury kid ends up in Florida or Edmonton.
Something about Ritchie reminds me of Glencross. He has a scoring sense but doesn't seem to do much more than a direct wrister that won't be as effective in the NHL with bigger goalies, better defense, less time and more shot blocking. Whereas Bennett is offering up blind backhand passes and sick wrap arounds. </end meaningless comments from 12 mins of highlights about 2 guys we won't be drafting>

At this rate, when someone above the Flames in the standings wins the draft lottery, they'll be drafting 7th.
I don't like cheering for losses, but I was getting high hopes for Bennett at 4th, then told myself Dal Colle at 5th. If they keep playing like this we'll be picking 6th, with the potential to drop to 7th.

We might be drafting 8th.
Would not surprise me if we win out and the rest of those teams lose all their games.
Think we may be destined to never have a top 5 pick.

Flames chance of drafting 4th just about gone after tonight.
Good news is that winning in a shootout means they can no longer pass Vancouver, while they can tie them on points, regulation wins will be at best a tie and Vancouver has already won the season series for points. Lowest lottery pick will be 7th. Thank goodness for small breaks at least.
Bad news is that if they beat Winnipeg on Friday and Carolina loses to Washington there is a very real chance they could slip as far down as 7th, it will no longer be a longshot but more of a toss up.

Seriously, Perlini or Kapanen would be amazing choices if we fall out of the top five. Kapanen is an extremely skilled RW (with a RH shot to boot!). A little show boaty but whatever, his skill is crazy good.
IDC who the Flames nab as long as Ritchie isn't the guy.

I don't feel like there will be a whole lot of difference in quality from pick 5 to pick 10 this year.
Now that I know we aren't finishing bottom 4, I'm not too concerned if we fall another spot or even 2.
Really wanted pick 4 though... Would've had an outside shot at snagging one of Reinhart/Bennett/Ekblad.

There's really a massive drop-off after #5, so of course you know the Flames will be picking 6th. These perennial losers hogging the picks is so frustrating.

Honestly, even if you feel that way about the players (which I don't agree with), you could trade down a few spots and get a pretty decent secondary pick for doing so.
It sucks because it makes the end of NHL seasons crappy for non-playoff teams not really being able to win without shooting yourself in the the foot but 2 or 3 slots at the high end of the draft are not negligible as an asset.

Everything I've heard/read says its a strong top 5 and drops significantly afterwards.
Bennett - Dal Colle - Draisaitl - Ekblad - Reinhart
After that it's a crapshoot, apparently.

Well then, it's up to Carolina to pull their socks up and win a few.
I don't like those odds.

I don't know about Draisaitl being top 5, anyway, if he's top 5 I'm not very happy about the quality of this draft in general then. Got to see him a few times this year, and everytime came away underwhelmed that he would be an NHLer. More of a gut feeling than anything, but I just didn't like his game. Would be very disappointed if he ended up with the Flames. After that the only other top 5 pick I've seen play is Reinhart and we all know that he's pretty damn good, so my opinion kind of ends there for this draft.
