I did flip him the bird, and hit the thunder horn, but I'm sure he was to far away to see.
I've had one really bad confrontation before. It was downtown on 7th st(thankfully we have a cycle track now) and the guy decided to change into my lane without looking. He was so close that I swerved and balanced myself by bouncing my hand off his car. So the guy flips out and pulls over in front of me and leans out his window "why you hit my car? You have no right to touch my car!" (It was a crappy Honda Accord, not a Bugatti Veyron). So I tell him him hit me, and he just keeps freaking out about hitting his car. I try to explain that he changed into my lane and basically hit me, but he was so focused on my touching his car that he just didn't get it, or thought he had a right to run me over. When the light goes green he pulls ahead, so I think we are done, then he drives up onto the sidewalk and blocks me.
So I'm stopped straddling my bike, and this nut bag opens his door and steps forward and says "how you like it if I hit your bike?" and I say "what are you gonna do" and he steps forward and kicks my tire.
"are you serious? Did you just kick my bike? Are you crazy?"
He takes another step towards me, and I'm not having any of that so I slid off the back of my bike and lifted my front tire to get my bike between me and him. He moves forward again, and I'm freaked out, so I smack him across the chest with my front tire and he falls back into his car, as the door was open. Someone at this point says, something about calling the police, and he shut his door and drove off.
People are goddamned crazy, and are out to kill you. FWIW, I've had zero incidents now that we have a cycle track there. Sooo much better.

Jesus. I've never had anything more serious than a flip off / car horn contest.

Ya, it was a unique experience for me...It's the reason I bought and advocate for the thunderhorn or something similar. Had I had one I might have at least had a chance at warning him. It has saved my bacon a few times now.

Did a quick west bragg loop yesterday. Beautiful day, so nice to breathe the air again. First trail rip using shimano 1X11 drivetrain, dropped the chain probably a dozen times in 2 hours. Anyone else having trouble with this setup? I have it tuned nicely. Chain length seems good (on 40T ring, the der is hanging at the 4 o'clock position). Using a new 11 speed chain, not using the shimano chainring, but a 32T NW (which is supposed to be fully compatible). Any ideas? Wierdly, I think I may be happier with the old 10 speed with 42T hack.

Those need a special chain, don't they? Is that what you are using?

ugh had a frustrating commute in this morning - fired up my garmin and it told me that the battery was dead......went to turn left from my crescent to the first collector street and it seemed as if everyone in my neighborhood was leaving for work at the same time as I had to wait for about 10 cars to pass.......then on the commute it felt like I was pedalling in a box the whole way.......
there is one spot on my commute that is a very slight uphill and the spot is about 10 minutes from the office - no matter what I do, or how fit I think I am, I just bonk on this stretch and it has become a real struggle to get thru......at the end of this little section I have passed a kid going to day care, the kid is disabled and walks with the aid of crutches and I then think how weak and lazy I am.....

Now a serious reply.
I can't speak specifically to the 1x11 setup, but how/where was the chain coming off?
If it keeps going off the top of the cassette when you shift up it's probably something really simple, likely your limit screws not set up properly.

If anyone's buying anything from chain reaction cycles in the next week and wants a $10 off code, I have one.

Wow! Must have been super frustrating on a new 1x11!!!
A couple question pop into my mind.
1 - when was it dropping? during shifting? back pedalling? Just coming down a bump section of terrain?
2- any particular gear/gears the chain is falling off?
3- is your chainring set up in the "middle" ring position? even if it is, do you need spacers to get a better chainline?
I have 1x11 XX1 drivetrain and a 1x10 zee hack with Hope 42T ring. Never had a problem with my chain dropping.

garmin dead for second morning in a row - very annoyed.
Need to try and figure out what battery it needs - I guess - or see if I can exchange it at MEC

I can't even find my Garmin. No freakin' clue what I did with it. Usually I throw it in a saddlebag but it isn't there. Now begins the interim period where I struggle between continuing to search and hoping it turns up or just buying a new one... at which point, according to universal laws of physics, the lost item will immediately appear in the most obvious place possible.

Thanks for the input into chain issue. I do have a new 11 speed chain. Checked it for stretch, no problems there. Dropping on bumps on the way down... and it wasn't event that bumpy (BR/reconnect). It's not flying off the cassette; it is coming off the chainring. Chain line is good. Using the spacers that came with the OneUp chainring. Derailleur clutch seems to be working fine (new derailleur). Only thing I can think of is a problem with the chainring itself. It has, maybe, 500km on it? Do these things wear out that fast?

Finally got my wheel back from the broken freehub. New design is much more solid, so it shouldn't happen again...Had a nice quick spin around nose hill. Soooo dry up there.

I'm in the same boat. Have been for a year. It's highly annoying.

Check out the app trailforks. You download trails for different regions, and it has the trail maps and provides a trail condition report. It seems to be pretty decent.

One up came out with a small upper chain guide so I suppose that says something. I haven't had dropping issues with the wolf tooth front ring on my fatbike. Lots of km on that ring. My raceface ring on trail bike is ok as well but newer. I used to run a small DIY upper chain guide with a normal 28t ring, no clutch derailleur and never dropped a chain. If I was having problems like you, change the ring or get an upper guide. I've read that chains can start dropping when the ring becomes worn.

In FATuation
It was Fat Bike Friday and I keep finding out how fun this Farley is. Again I took it out to some single track at Fish Creek and I keep getting amazed at how shock absorbent these fat tires are. For a bike with no suspension it is quite comfortable and those big tires just roll on over roots and rocks.
Playing around with my bike I found this little gem printed on the frame.
Time to break out the cyclocross this weekend but this damn bike keeps tempting me to the fat side like a totally loaded Five Guys burger and bag fulla fries.
