Maybe I'm missing something, but to me trading Galchenyuk, Sergachev, and Subban in a year seems unbelievably stupid.

Bergevin should go all in and trade Price to Calgary for Troy Brouwer.

I think Galchenyuk would be a great add for the Flames. Slap him on RW. Don't know what to give up. 1st and.... or player _____.

Calgary seemingly has zero trade able assets with any value. Everyone good we can't do without, everyone expendable is garbage and holds no value for a galchenyuk

Not sure how serious you're being but I'll tackle it anyway. If there's any position the Flames have an overabundance of it's probably centre. IMO all of Monahan, Bennett, Backlund and Jankowski project as top two centres if the younger ones develop well. Lazar, Hamilton and Stajan as depth centres. That said an excess or overabundance of quality centres isn't a particularly bad problem to have. You can move one to the wing and then you have versatility in your lineup.
If the Flames moved any core player IMO it could be a young centre for a young top 3 defenseman. But I think we stand pat with these centres for now.

Id like to keep those guys, move one to wing if too crowded at center.
What I mean is a truly expendable player who could still fetch something decent. Ferland? Yah maybe but can we give up on his potential when it's combined with the size? We've seen what he could be, just needs the consistency.
If stupid Brouwer had scored 23 goals and got 2 in the playoffs he would be the perfect chip. Someone expendable to be packaged for a galchenyuk type player and the team getting Brouwer could sell their fans on the playoff vet we got told we were getting. But he couldn't even put up those measily numbers
Who else can we trade? Getting pretty bare on picks. No blue chip prospects (mostly because chucky is a core guy in the show already). We need to move cap space (brouwer to Vegas, bribe them with a b prospect or 2) and go the free agent route. I see no other options.

kind of right up there with two of the darkest days (Jan/Feb 2010) in in Flames history with another GM trying to save his job

Doesn't matter if Brouwer scores 23 he wouldn't be part of a realistic package for a young guy like Galch.

Pretty much.
Hopefully over the next few years we are over run with expendable assets.

Yes there is still very little organizational depth, nor do we have an abundance of draft picks. To become a contender, Flames can't afford many misses.

If quality centres will be in short supply for Vegas in this expansion draft, I wonder what you could pry out of them for Backlund? I'm talking a return in roster players, not picks.
I feel like this is one of those times where if you swing for the right fence you could put your team over the top. It's almost like a trade lottery.

This is the hard part of starting from scratch, every asset is important, every missed trade or cap space allocation is particularly damaging, and it's extremely difficult to 'go for it' when an opportunity presents itself.

I find it hard to envision any trade with Vegas involving Backlund where the Flames come out "over the top"

Vegas won't get a single player as valuable as Backlund.

With Phillips progressing well and being small and Johnny solidified as a top line NHL'er, I would put Mangiapane in the expendable camp.
That said:
To Flames - Galchenyuk and conditional 4th
To Habs - Calgary 2017 1st, Andrew Mangiapane and one of Kulak, Wotherspoon, Culkin and rights to Rafikov (4th conditional of Russian signing with the Habs)
I think the Flames still have some assets with good value such as guys like Mangiapane.

Just caught a Craig Button interview on AM770 while I was driving. Had a few comments I can remember:
- Drouin brings scoring and excitement to Montreal, is young so might influence Price re-signing. Also lets them dangle other assets.
- Sergachyev is a top pair defenseman, and trading Drouin also frees up cap space for Johnson/Palat
- Housley is really inexperienced, Sabres have to stick by him through growing pains
- some expansion stuff, nothing too interesting.
- Draft is wide open, even Makar could go first. Flames could very well get a guy ranked 4th on their list down at 16. Maybe not an out-and-out star player but a great "Backlund type" rock in their system.
- Stone "settled down" our defense
- Calgary should be on the up in the west if they figure out their goaltending
- thinks Calgary should add a speedy, skilled player on line with Monahan/Gaudreau instead of "weighty" Ferland (was strange, since Ferland is speedy and skilled. I attribute it to East bias. But I generally agree we need to get faster as a team.)
