Lots of smoke around the Hawks tonight. Texts w several sources have me in "hold on to your butt" mode. Good chance core guy is moved soon
|
If this is a true rumor, it's likely a guy like Brent Seabrook being moved.

From that Jay Zawaski guy, he posted a summary on twitter:
"Been told by multiple sources that a "core" will likely be dealt soon"
"It is NOT Toews"
"It will weaken the team in the short term(salary dump or trade for picks and or prospects)"
"There is no indication that a trade is coming tonight"

Well, if this guy is actually legit, somehow I fear it will be Seabrook to the Oilers and it will be a pretty good deal for Edmonton because the Hawks are over a barrell with the cap.
Please let me be wrong.

Kane for Brouwer. Hawks bring back a former player and save 5.5 in cap space.

Would need to add Klimchuk, and it would need to happen now for it to make sense.

No the Flames need Brouwer's toughness, grit, leadership and size, otherwise we won't be able to hang with the Anaheim Ducks with Andrew Cogliano, Cam Fowler, Brandon Montour.

Isn't Seabrook signed till 2024 or something. That contract is not good. A team would be doing them a favor.

Adding Seabrook would probably set the Oilers back quite a bit.

It comes down to the acquisition cost, which is why I had to qualify my initial "prediction" (such as it is).
Seabrook's contract may be a bit of an anchor in a few years' time, but at the moment he's exactly the kind of player the Oilers need, and who the hell knows what kind of "get out of jail free" cards will become available during the next lockout. I could see Edmonton giving up their 'meh' 1st round pick in a 'meh' draft to push themselves over the top next year.
Granted, maybe Chiapet has more of an eye than I do towards what McDavid and Draisaitl will do to their cap situation, but he hasn't exactly proven himself to be an astute cap manager, so I doubt it.

Seabrook would make the Oilers a significantly bigger threat even though both he and Lucic would hamper the Oilers in about 2 years.
I don't think they are going to be able to afford it unless they ditch Eberle/RNH for nothing.

to be fair though, the grease's window is most open next year.
once mcdingus is getting paid 12+ Chia won't know how to fill in the many blanks in that roster

Yeah, great contract for a team that needs to hit the floor, at 38 and now only making $1m a year one would have to think retirement will come within months.
But it'll take a real cheap team to eat a $5.275m cap hit for 4 more years.
Here's looking at Arizona or Carolina

Hossa comes with cap recapture penalties if he retires, and IIRC the Hawks still get dinged with some of it even if they trade him.

Hawks probably do need to make a move even if it incurs some short term pain.

They get hit with all of it, they need to trade him to a team willing to buy him out in exchange for an asset. Or find a way to get him on LTIR.

It's strange how happy I am that, after next season, there won't be a single contract in the league beyond 8 years. Parise & Suter are down to 8 with the conclusion of 16/17, however Weber still has 9.
Personally, I'd like to see the league knock another 2 years off of the max term in the next CBA.
