Perhaps, but I'd still say that Iggy has the bigger upside. I really don't think that Chaisson can be any better than what we've already seen.

Also your Iggy signing for $600k extension is laughable.
Calling me out sure is constructive, isn't it. I'm surprised you're so defensive. I'm not saying he'd sign for that low, but it's possible. Especially with his current production and maybe a desire to play one final year.

I have to agree with this. I don't see Iggy taking anybody out of the top 9. I also think Chiasson is better suited for the 4th line over Iggy. If we are talking about pressboxing Chiasson, then I hope its for Hathaway.

How I got that number:
$642.5k full season cap hit to stop using LTIR
then $2.85 million in full season cap space off the books at the deadline means $637.5k in cap space created from the deadline to the end of the season.

That of course is the bare minimum of salary that iand doesn't allow for callups for the rest of the season. Ideally you would want more than the $3.5 million moved out so you can still do callups during the rest of the regular season.
Thanks for the math, but also, ugh.

Without putting too much effort into it, do you know if many other teams face this kind of scenario for next year?

I wonder if part of the price for not moving wideman is partially to force calgary to eat it a bit next year as well.

Iginla has NO upside. He's 39 years old for Christ sake. He's done. Chaisson has no upside left either, but based on CURRENT play, Chaisson is the better player and fits for the role expected of him. Iginla could not fill that role.

Yeah but Iggy isn't getting 14:41 of ice time here and definitely isn't getting 2:15 of PP time here. I see Iginla's production decreasing here not increasing. Chiasson just needs to keep doing what he is doing on the 4th line, providing size, speed and being defensively responsible, outside of size Iginla doesn't bring speed or being defensively responsible.

I just don't see the fit.

Chiasson isn't the bottom six RW that the Flames need to upgrade.

Commodore kinda calling inside scoops on trades on twitter... ones I haven't seen on CP yet include Halak going to Edmonton, and he's also mentioned that Eberle may be on the move but I'm not sure if those deals are connected (different tweets).

He called the Shattenkirk deal around the same time as most other media analysts.

Edit: and now he just tweeted Beleskey from Boston to Florida

If no legitimate team takes Iginla for their run (I'm hoping the Caps do it right now), then I hope the Flames at least drag him along with their attempt. The man at least deserves some hope in what could be his last season.

Iginla would be a better fit as a 3rd line RW and a shooter on the PP. Brouwer would be a better fit on the 4th line than Chiasson.

If the Flames are going to go out and get reasonably priced rentals, then do both Iginla AND Sharp (although in both cases, we'd need salary retained and Wideman out the door).

Tkachuk - Backlund - Frolik
Gaudreau - Monahan - Ferland
Sharp - Bennett - Iginla
Versteeg - Stajan - Brouwer
Hamilton

Roll 4 lines that can contribute in all 3 zones. It'd be fun to watch.

That is an insanely deep team for forward depth; definitely would be fun to watch.

The only way the Flames can fit in Sharp is to have the Stars retain 50% of the salary ($2.95 mil cap hit) and then send someone like Chiasson or F. Hamilton the other way or bury them in the AHL.

Or just move Wideman.

So we'd probably have to give up a 2nd to get Sharp and then probably another asset for the Stars to take Wideman's salary. Unless it's a C-level prospect or low round draft pick the acquisition cost is too high for a rental.

The cost to get iginla and sharp would be too high. No team is going to eat salary out of the kindness.

they would eat salary if Calgary has the best offer available

pretty much every deal so far has had retained salary...a team selling players isn't worried about the cap

Ya if it's a choice of moving a rental with some retained salary and getting an asset in return or paying the full salary anyway and not getting any assets back the choice is easy.
