True enough, I bet the Oilers are probably regretting having to protect him.
I doubt that they'll protect Kassian either because nobody wants to see him with a home in Vegas if you know what I mean (mimes glug glug motion)

I really hope that Treliving doesn't protect Brouwer because of perceived optics as he's exactly the type of player that you expose as he's not a difference maker on your team and he's highly paid for what he provides.

Sifting through who the Flames will expose who else jumps out over Ferland? Possibly Brouwer if he is available and Vegas is seeking leadership and the cap floor? Ferland is more appealing than Bouma or Stajan. Maybe Shinkaruk or Poirer if Vegas thinks there is more there. Ferland is on pace for 15 goals, has size, speed, toughness, and likely can be signed cheap. At 25 years old this summer he will be the type of player Vegas would covet from Calgary

I would do it.
I guess I'll expand on why I'm thinking of this. It's no secret that Treliving is still searching for a #1, and I don't believe that Bishop, Fleury, or Howard will be his target. Treliving has to nail this acquisition, and I believe Schneider could be available as NJ is a young team and at least a few years away from being a contender.

Prefer to trade Gillies to Parsons if we are looking for a 5 year atop gap but I would do it either way. Salary needs to go back to Jersey though

I like stone, but he's a UFA, so he'll be exposed for sure...
With RFAs, i believe that if vegas signs them from a team, that team can't lose another player in the expansion draft...
With UFA, i am not sure if they actually "count" as a loss for us in the expansion draft? In theory, Vegas uses the 48hr UFA head start and signs Stone...Would they still be able to pick someone like Brouwer as well?
Maybe someone with a better reading/understanding of the expansion draft rules can answer this question?

I don't know are we convinced that Gilles is ready to take that next step next year?

I would definitely be okay with that trade. However, like said before, I would want to send a guy like Stajan/Bouma/Brouwer in the trade.
The guy that makes the most sense of Bouma. This way Schneider's salary becomes $3.8 MM for 2017-2018. Stajan will be coming off the books at the end of the year in 2018 which should offset the increase in Salary for Backlund.
At the end of 2018, hopefully Brouwer will bounce back and have a terrific year. If not, he would have been with the Flames for two years and it would be perfectly reasonable if he gets traded for picks (for those of you who don't believe a UFA signing should be traded so soon).

Draft Pick
|
There is no advantage to Stone to resign right away - especially if there is a chance that he could be claimed in the expansion draft.
Best case scenario, the Flames go on a fun playoff run and Stone plays a big role.
Worst case, he decides to sign with the highest bidder in the summer and the whole thing costs the Flames a middling draft pick for the effort.

I'm wondering if this is some attempt at a money ball trade by Boy wonder. I know he looks like complete garbage at the NHL level but look at those advanced stats. We need to get this guy.

How on earth does that appeal to NJ? Trade their best player for two magic beans including a pick in a weaker 1st round? Horrible trade for NJ

Looks like it'll be another trade deadline where nothing happens.
Boyle would've been good depth for us. Wonder what the price was.

Gonna guess a 2017 2nd , conditional 3rd or 4th, and some fringe roster player

Good, keep him out of Edmonton. Although Chia would have overpaid.

I'd argue that Schneider had more value when New Jersey traded for him 4 years ago, and they sent the 9th overall pick to Vancouver to get him.
Is a ~15th pick + Parsons really that far off?
